As for the controls , they're about as "archaic" as 2020 WSAD releases, so you're kind of just sounding out of touch with the game there, are you posting in the wrong forum?
Ah okay, well I just recently completed another playthrough of Dark Forces 2 without much difficultly. Traps aren't too aplenty in Dark Forces 2, so you shouldn't be running into tons of mines. Really, the only part that I remember a bunch of mines was through Baron's Head toward the Dark Palace.
My biggest issue with Dark Forces 2 is that the lightsaber combat objectively sucks. Its understandable considering it was the first Star Wars game to really try and do decent lightsaber combat, but unsurprisingly it is garbage compared to Jedi Outcast and definitely Jedi Academy. The easiest way to get through the game for me was to just stick to using blasters.
Lightside is the best way to go through the game too because you can unlock Force Protection which is the most brokenly op force ability in the game. Pretty much 100% immunity to all damage for a few seconds and it can be reused almost immediately.
