Game Crashes PC when closing via in-game menu

As the title says, whenever I'm closing the game from its menu, it causes the PC to crash. Not a blue screen, not a black screen, but the game somehow does not actually close and closing it via task-manager is not possible. Also, the mouse pointer stays the in-game pointer, and while you can switch between windows with alt+tab you cannot actually click anything. What does work sometimes is shutting down or rebooting the system via the windows home button and of course the PC's reset button works reliably.

No idea what's up with that but this is something that really should get a fix! (Although I highly doubt this will ever happen, considering the game's age.)
