also is it fun?
I can also confirm it does work with the 360 controller, but a few things should be swapped from the defaults (like the triggers should be moved to the Right analog) . I'll play around later and post the settings if I come up with something good. If someone else has a recommendation I'll try yours too.

Also remember to bind A to Fire lassers and B to Fire secondary, so they work as Accept and Cancel in menus. Finally bind "Report In" with Dpad Right, "Cover me" with Dpad Down, "Defend Target" with Dpad left and "Attack Target" with Dpad up. This way the Dpad works as it should in menus.
Flight sticks work perfectly (the game was made with flight sticks in mind)
As for being fun, I'd say it's about as fun as Rogue Squadron on N64
