DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE

Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku reinvisioned.
Perhaps I'm the only one, but oddly enough my favorite DBZ games of all time are actually the GBA titles: DBZ: The Legacy of Goku I & II. I always thought DBZ would make a great RPG, and they proved you could have an amazing experience following the show and playing through all the different characters.

That's not to say that the fighting games aren't great either. DBZ: Budokai (1-3) are still the best of all the fighter games imo, and Dimps (who is making XV) made those games. It would be nice if we had an experience that wasn't just limited to the restrictions of a fighting game. XV is oddly a hybrid between a fighter and a RPG with the custom character, social hub, and character progression through a mentor, so it's going in the right direction.

Would anybody else actually like to see The Legacy of Goku overhauled for consoles and PC with 3D visuals? I really do believe a DBZ RPG would be fantastic, and there have been very few. The last major one to come out was probably Dragon Ball Online (the MMO) and it was far from a quality game and was shut down shortly after its launch. XV is actually doing a lot of things Dragon Ball Online failed to do.

Well, I've played the LoG series and I thought the first one was a steaming pile of poo (to put it mildly).

The others improved greatly. It would be fun to see a remake of those games, but I don't think a DmC style game would fit DB (as that would most likely fit with how the games are built).

In fairness the games came out on the Game Boy Advanced, so they aren't exactly recent... At the time, they were fantastic I thought.

Where does DmC come into this? I've never played that series of games, but they came across as a hack and slash and not an RPG. This is really less of an idea for just a remake and more so making an actual console/PC game based around some of the principles those games used. Exploration. Boss fights. More control over transformations. The fighting games are great, but they give a very small taste of what could be possible with a DBZ game.

Consider this:

Would the games work well if they played exactly the same like on the GBA, but are set in a 3d environment?

They would not. And since the DB series is know for people beating the ♥♥♥♥ out of each other, a game with exploration and RPG elements based on that principle would *most likely* apply a DmC-styled combat system.

I did a poor job of conveying my point in the OP then and I apologize. While I did state they should essentially make a Legacy of Goku with 3D environments, I didn't literally mean that. Of course the game and the experience would have to be overhauled and refined. I'm suggesting the basic principle of the game was spot on and I would love to see that adapted to console/PC gaming.

It would also be great to have more variety in DBZ games rather than all of them being fighting games. If we are to be quite honest, the DBZ fighting games haven't really changed a lot since DBZ Budokai. The experience is more or less the same with features and additions added to it overtime.

Also, while DB certainly has "people beating the ♥♥♥♥ out of each other," it also has lots of exploration, character development, character progression, and story. I'm not saying to undermine the fighting aspect, but to merely add to it because there is more to DBZ than just beating each other to a pulp. I want a game with more depth. That is what DBO was attempting to do to a degree. Even XV is trying to add more RPG mechanics to the overly-used fighting template.

Again, I can't speak to DmC as I've never played that game nor do I know how the combat works. I'm specifically focusing on DBZ, the series, and the games.

You're talking about making a rpg style game of the Dragon Ball series right? Well thats what you are getting with Xenoverse if you seen the the gameplay. There is no other way to make this series more rpg espacially coming from a fighting anime. With Xenoverse they put the best Rpgs elements in it because thats what fans were asking for along time. I dont see any possible way to go more down the road with making it better then this. (Inb4 Budokai elitist)

Yes. DBXV is going in the right direction. It's still fundamentally a fighting game, but it has been injected with a lot of RPG elements to make it more of a well-rounded DBZ experience.

I don't really see the argument that DBZ can't become more of an RPG. All RPGs are is essentially interactive TV shows. As I stated before, the DBZ series has combat, story, exploration, and progression, which are the four pillars of an RPG.

What Japan has largely focused on developing is only the combat part and the story part to a lesser extent. We are getting a bit more variety with XV, as it's almost an MMO in some aspects, but again I believe there could still be a lot more done. It's only a suggestion for future games.

As I said before, DBZ fighting games have not changed significantly since the Budokai trilogy. XV is probably the most radical departure, but it's also made by the same developer who made the Budokai trilogy. It would just be nice if the next 5-10 DBZ games aren't just XV rip-offs much like most of the games after Budokai were.
