Well...there is the possible story reason of the Majin race being split-offs from Buu and his waifu but that aside...yeah questionable design choice.

Yeah but did we ever get canon validation that there actually are (many) more Buu´s around?
Always was of the impression that Buu was just some freak of nature.

The Majin race comes from Dragon Ball Online, which Toriyama claims is canon.
In it, Majin Buu discovered what love was after reading one of Mr. Satan's porno mags.
He then creates a female Majin, called "Miss Buu".
All the Majin come from them. Presumably all the males are made from Majin Buu and all the females from Miss Buu.

There is a "story reason". In the series Majin Buu is not an alien race, he is a creature created by a wizard. One of a kind and all of that. If you take time to talk to NPCs you can talk to one mentions that the Buu we see are all clones of Majin Buu. I do not remember exactly which one says this but I did remember she was in the area where you place the Dragonballs, and she mentions it sometime after finishing the Frieza saga.

So as clones of Majin Buu they are....fat by default I guess?

Rollout is pretty much on the spot there(which is what I was pointing towards with my first comment).Xenoverse took quite a few concepts and even characters from DBO.
Still wish Majin race would have gotten the kid buu transformation too.

In DBO(where Towa and Mira are from) Majin Buu got lonely and created a wife for himself, which in turn created the majin race.

For those interested DBO was closed in 2013. Good new is there is an effort to create an emulator to allow you to still play the game. Such as how you can (or at least could) still play Star Wars Online even after official servers were shut down. Just something interesting to mention.

Basically, they're copies of their parents, the males looking like Fat Buu and the females looking like Miss Buu. "Two starting careers are available to the Majin race: Mighty Majin (the physical fighting class) and Wonder Majin (the spiritual class)." Mighty Majin is the Fat Buu, and it's resembled quite well here as the Male Majin is better in tanking and physical attacks, the Wonder Majin is the Female Majin, whom is better in ki.

So yeah...there's a reason why the Majin Race is how it is, as silly as it ma be.
