Online play is still up, but the playerbase has contracted severely. Take one look at the forum and you'll find plenty of "Why no one play PvP" topics. At this point the game is best played with Steam friends, if its really worth playing at all at this point; its quest-based grind-a-thon multiplayer-oriented RPG with no special endgame content after the story ends (just more, higher-level quests) and far less multiplayer now than on release. The story is nice and you play quests and versus matches solo, but without other players you are grinding for nothing aside from slightly-stronger versus mode enemies (they level with whatever character you're using).
