Subtitle Issues

I've been hankering to reply this game for possibly the hundredth time and I can't be bothered to reinstall the boxed copy I own. However I'm having an issue in that I can't get the subtitles to show up and I'm trying to play it without any sound at all.

I know it's suppose to be F9 but none of the function keys actually seem to do anything. In fact the entire keyboard seems to be acting like a left click on my mouse for some weird reason. The only response I can get is by holding Ctrl and pressing F9 which asks me if I want to quit the game or not.

Any help getting this sorted would be appreciated

No "Fn" key for "fonction" to press with F9?
