Don't be afraid to experiment with the buildings. Usually the game sets the footprint larger than is necessary when placing them. You can force the footprint to be as small as possible with a good road layout for your city. Every little room helps. That way you maybe able to squeeze in another building somewhere else.
I appreciate the response
I think this confused me " You can have them placed temporarily where a future building footprint will be occupying the space (a yellow warning will be displayed),"
Think I'm set up to make a better effort at doing what I can in an impossible situation.
Objective for the next 3 day. Use my new found ability to build roads to give my people a little more of a chance to survive.
To clarify for you. The two wall drill build positions in New Home can have a road built across them before you have researched the wall drill tech and you will be informed that it will interfere with the future building placement, the road is displayed in yellow across the building footprint prior to constructing. The other situation is where you have a flashing yellow road when you have a disconnect somewhere in the road layout or that the road simply hasn't been constructed anew as yet as Disciple mentioned.
It is possible to micromanage your people in such a way that you can have a couple of road builders for the roads whilst everyone else are at their workplaces. There will always be two engineers out of five available from each medical post that can be put to good use during the work shift unless of course they are gallivanting off to the cookhouse to eat. You can always close it down temporarily and tell them to get back to work as the Captain.
Good luck
Thanks, stupid thing, but I assumed that roads could be built in spaces next to and from buildings, tents etc, when in fact they have to all have a link to the central furnace, which makes sense given the general nature of survival in Frostpunk.
It really is simple, like you I got frustrated at the beginning. There has to be a link to the central furnace, that's it. Not direct but just mess about the road builder make sure there is a link to the central furnace, you have a road.
