Hmm. OK so you are completely new to the game I take it?

The very first thing you need to build is a workshop, better yet, 2 workshops. Staff them with engineers. All of your tech and resource gathering outside of gathering scraps is researched there. Rush to beacon and scouts after that. You need more people to fuel your industry.

Sawmills can gather wood at frozen trees, wall drills are better if you can spare the steam cores. Either way, you want at least one steel mill, one saw mill or wall drill, a steady food supply and one of either a coal mine or coal thumper before day 6 or so.

You can't put steel mills just anywhere, there should be a couple of iron or deposits on your field.

Beyond this, you will have to be more specific about what is vexxing you.

Skip the sawmill its not needed its better to use your wood effectivly at first and tech to t1 early getting wall drill. Wall drill is a unlimited and better labor wise source of wood. There is really no time other than last autumn and rifts endless that you really want sawmills rather than going right to wall drill. You will need to think about your wood spending so that you dont run our doing this thou but its worth doing. This means within the first 3 tech you want to go t1 than wall drill after (norm as tech 4) the two other techs ill let you find out what is best unless you ask as don't want to spoil to much.

Frozen trees are the trees you see around the map.

You do want 2 workshops at min one on day 1 one of day 2 or even day 1. Add more as you get more engs. Ideally 2/3 of your eng at least should be in tech at all times unless med truly stops it and if so your falling behind and likely going to lose via spiraling out of control.

Coal thumper you can place anywhere it makes its own coal from the ground but will need gathing posts to gather the coal it picks up.

You cant expand your area some areas are bigger than others based on the map but the campaign maps are fixed for each scenario.

As your likely playing on easy-hard one of those 3 diffs take food additives (sawdust meals) to make food easier its just better than soup in easy/normal in hard its comparable in extreme soup will norm be better.

You need hunters to get the raw food thou as wont have cores to get hothouse after placing a wall drill till later on. Thumpers + hothouses make a good labor effective setup for coal + food once you get your 2nd core thou. Mines are ok but are less labor effective per core than hothouses so norm better to go houthouse thumper vs hunter mines unless cores are no issue and you can go both hothouse mines.

A lots Workshop then you get fastest reseacher stuff and upgrade coal, steel,Wood and Food.
Robot is very good to use. need get steam core from like some from Tesla city.
Infermeny can also use robot..so you can use a lots engieener on workshop.

For frozen tree location : whenever you want to place a building and it says it would destroy ressources, it's frozen trees.
If it says it's the location of an important building it's for either coal mine, wall drill, iron mine or outpost.
Try to commit to one tech per ressource and not research another tech for that same ressource unless you have researched ecerything else you need.

For coal thumpers you need gathering outposts closeby as well, the thumper only extract coal from the crust to make a pile of coal.

Also read the tutorials when they pops on the top left corner.
