food production
I feel like I'm missing something, because without exaggeration, I'm getting in bad shape within the first few days on my first two attempts. Is it just a requirement to research the hunting upgrade immediately and build two hunting cabins ASAP? Or is there an easier way to get food production to 80/day?

I would say hunting upgrade sinds you're going to need the extra manpower for other things.

You might want to think about Soup if you are that hard up. Gives you 4x food for some hate lol

the cookhouse takes 1 raw food and makes 2 cooked rations. 2 upgraded hunters and 1 cookhouse will produce 80/day

Admittedly, I would like the extra 15 workers for other things, but I'm not sure what upgrades would get me up to subsistence level. I'm not even to the point where I have been able to unlock the second research tier.

Right, that's what I thought. Basically, you need two hunting cabins, or whatever they're called, just to stay afloat. Unless I'm mistaken about the amount of rations people eat. I thought it was 1 per person per day. Can anybody correct me if I'm wrong?

Yeh, it seems to be 1 ration per person per day.

A single hothouse produces +75 with soup and only needs 10 workers. Once upgraded it produces +150. You can build one on day 2 if you research it first.

Is that what you do, or are you just offering that as a suggestion? So you basically would want to skip the first tier of research in that case an prioritize building a workshop on day one.

I've been checking the graph, and it actually looks like people generally eat slightly less than 80 rations per day. Not a lot less. Maybe it fluctuates between around 65 and 80. I haven't bothered to actually watch the storage numbers change.

Can somebody tell me what flying hunters do? I'm currently weighing whether or not to unlock that research tier, as I've gotten my first group of lost settlers, and it's either that or build another hunters' hut.

Flying hunters increase the returns of food basically, they make it so that a huntsman's lodge returns just as much food as a hothouse does.

I've found that by day 15 between a hothouse and 3 huntsman's lodges, even without using soup, I'm able to feed the entire population.

Build 2 workshops as soon as possible, it'll speed up your research and have them on long shifts all the time (ignore the complaints). Take 'soup' as your third option in Book of Laws and make sure your cookhouse switched production. You can get by with one hunter's hut easily for the first 4 days or so with that setup, research gear and tactics to save on manpower, build a second hut in advance and keep expanding. Also get scouts as soon as you can afford it, and make it a priority. They can find a lot of good stuff in the wasteland.

I did two runs through first scenario and never built a single hothouse in there. Once you gain momentum it's easy to keep on top of food.

Oh, neat. So my two hunters' huts can get me to 120 rations per day, or 150 if I'm using soup. That would be nice.

On my current playthrough, I'm not having too much of an issue. It was just on my first couple of attempts, I didn't really check the production numbers too closely, and was surprised when all of my food started disappearing.

In this playthrough, I basically built two hunters' huts right away, but you're right--it's something like 3 days before they actually start eating your food, so it's not an emergency. I am serving soup, because let's be real here--that should be the least of these people's concerns.
