1 workshop = 100%
2 = 130%
3 = 150%
4 and more = +10% each.

So the first 3 are really worth it and then it's less and less worth it.
If you are using a efficiency boost with order law tree for instance, be sure to rotate the use of the boost rather than boosting all of yoir workshops and then none.
After that, if you want to speed up research, a good way is engineer automatons.
There is time during new home to research 100% of the techs.

thanks for the advice. also is this the same as 'research rate'? as even with 4 work shop it still shows only '100% research rate' (in screenshot) . or does that value not change on screen you just work it out yourself?

2 workshops must have 100% efficiency each in order to get to 130% research speed, etc
It's not specified in game that it's equivalent to 130%
If you get over 100% with child apptentices for instance, it boosts even more the research time.

As Bobywan has explained, three workshops fully staffed will give you a research rate of 150%. Each additional workshop adds 10%, so if you have eight workshops fully staffed you will get 150 + (8x10) = 230% as your maximum potential research rate. Click on any of your workshops to check.

You can boost that figure still further if you have child engineering apprentices (Law) or the Purpose Law ability of a foreman and/or a Agitator (Order specific), or a shrine (Faith specific).

Automatons start with a 60% work rate efficiency so they are less effective at researching or working in general, but you can increase that to 100% making them equivalent to a human and very useful on a night shift.

Wait. Don't you mean 200%; rather 230%

You said 3 fully staffed work shops would give you 150%. So if you have then, 8 workshops. That means only 5 work shops operating at 10% efficiency. Equaling a total of +50%

Add that to the previous (benefit) workshops of 150%; and you have a grad total of 200%

Is my math right here? Eight workshops total; ya?

Yes, you are correct in pointing out my human error of taking the information source as been correct on face value. I should have been more thorough and checked the maths as you did.

Unless you are going for achievement there's no real need to go more than 2 workshops usually.

Research is slower when you increase difficulty, so you will need more workshop to get less tech usually for the duration of the scenario.

How do you increase difficulty?
Custom game?

All I see is Normal mode and Survivor game.

Yes, click on the Customise Scenario option and choose a difficulty from easy, medium, hard or extreme. You can also adjust the settings for People Needs, Economy, Weather and your Society's attitude allowing for flexibility on any game setting.
