In this case "Frost Punk" was a lame name perhaps???
Not being up on Punk stuff I ignored this game for a long time. Saw a stream of the recent sale for "Frost Punk" and jumped into the snow. After playing all day for several days my purchase turned out to be a really hot selection. Game is one of the more interesting city builders I have played. Guess I need to unblock "Punk" in the Steam store? Someone please splain to this old far why Punk applies? Must say the concept of this game is superb and the play is great. Will definitely buy the next one~! Punk or not...

It's because the game is a steampunk game, and everything is frozen.

Exactly. Steampunk is a fictional genre and aesthetic usually set in the Victorian era where everything is powered by steam and yet oddly advanced for the time. Lots of gears on things that normally don't have gears. Replace steam with frost and here we are.

You're question did get me thinking, why do all of these fictional genre and aesthetics (steampunk, dieselpunk, atomicpunk, cyberpunk, the list is a long one) all have "punk" in the name.

Turns out cyberpunk was very likely the first one and they all seem to have born the word "punk" in the name, after whatever was deemed to be a main theme of the world, ever since.
A few quotes I found while looking on the net;
"The word cyberpunk was coined by writer Bruce Bethke, who wrote a story with that title in 1980. He created the term by combining "cybernetics," the science of replacing human functions with computerized ones, and "punk," the raucous music and nihilistic sensibility that became a youth culture in the 1970s and '80s."

"Steampunk borrowed its name from its literary and cultural antecedent: cyberpunk, which had a much more obvious punk aesthetic. Steampunk, at its core, harnesses the essence of the punk movement, by defying convention. Unlike Goth it wasn't shaped by any band or musical influence, per se."

----

But, yeah. Otherwise Frostpunk is just a play on words between steampunk, one of the more popular and better know of these sorts of fictional settings, and frost because the world is freezing over.
