However, be aware that if you're using hunters for food, they're active at night and sleep during part of the day, so they'll get sick according to their home temperature at that time.
the first few days of the game you can leave it off during the day if you want, either to min/max or cause your short on coal. just make sure its on at 3am.
but once you get futher into the game it gets colder and you'll get buildings that require steam to work, so then turning it off isn't an option anymore.
if you limit yourself to 1-2 steam hubs, the initial piles of coal should be plenty to keep the generator on all day until you get another coal source.
Agreed here. It's a viable way to conserve a bit of coal in the first few days, but once you start relying on steam hubs to keep work stations heated enough during the day, it stops being practical.
How do I unlock this feature? it was locked for me, is it on research?
you have it by default. research just improves it. click on the generator to turn it on/off.
