Am I suppose to turn off the generator at day?
What's the proper way of using the generator?

Should I turn it on at night and off at day?

Doing that would help save coal. You'll have discontent while the homes aren't heated if they aren't Livable, but that will go away once the generator is back on.
However, be aware that if you're using hunters for food, they're active at night and sleep during part of the day, so they'll get sick according to their home temperature at that time.

in general you want to keep it on.

the first few days of the game you can leave it off during the day if you want, either to min/max or cause your short on coal. just make sure its on at 3am.

but once you get futher into the game it gets colder and you'll get buildings that require steam to work, so then turning it off isn't an option anymore.

if you limit yourself to 1-2 steam hubs, the initial piles of coal should be plenty to keep the generator on all day until you get another coal source.

Agreed here. It's a viable way to conserve a bit of coal in the first few days, but once you start relying on steam hubs to keep work stations heated enough during the day, it stops being practical.

Note: The Generator overdrive does not use any extra coal whilst increasing the heat level by 1 level across the board. However, be very careful not to over-stress it or it will go boom, that's if you don't have a spare steam core to rescue the situation. You can only make use of the overdrive if the Generator is on.

you have it by default. research just improves it. click on the generator to turn it on/off.

Also you really shouldn't use it in the second half of the Winterhome scenario.
