I give up on coal mine that use a core and I have been using coal thumper. The steam coal thumper is the better version but they require more people, some on the coal thumper and some on the gathering post.
It seems that 2 gathering post can handle 1 coal thumper and 4 gathering post for 1 steam coal thumper, I have not use a hothouse before for food but have been using my core for a drill wall, infantry health building thing, a temporary factory and 4 automaton so far. The automaton help in cold places to reduce coal consumption to me or this is what I been doing
Gathering post can gather 2 and 3 piles of resources at the same time I think, when beginning so using those and when people left over, can send the rest on the pile directly while the gathering post is also working, I normally keep 5 people and if not planning on building at the moment, I use them on work, so I have a team on a workplace that I take off and put on when I need to build.
I can try to tell you almost exactly what I did if you want, but I did not survival the last part of the storm tho
Have you thought that you could use a different... more humane approach?
Your starting Steam Cores should go to Hothouses until you have all the other vital techs to spend 5 techs on fully upgraded Hunter's Hangars, then you can tear down the Hothouses and use the cores elsewhere. Your first four Steam Cores should go to two Industrial Hothouses, which is adequate to keep everyone fed. You can have a third if you want to have a food cushion, but it's generally not necessary.
Sawmills will usually last you comfortably to Day 20-25, so Wall Drill would be the second thing to focus your Cores on before the second storm. After that, Automatons or Coal Mine depending on how things are looking. Don't even bother with a base Coal Mine, they're not worth committing the cores until Steam/Advanced generally.
Not sure why you're getting overthrown from Discontent. You may be overdoing Emergency Shift. Generally the best use of Emergency Shift is keeping a single Workshop running 24 hours. You can also get away with a second Emergency Shift Day 1 for resource gathering, but it's generally not worth it for resources past that, just have resource gathering on as many Extended Shifts as you can afford the Discontent for.
I got the achievement for 100 days in Endless Extreme: via trial, error and a lot of restarting. :D
Only two deaths and one was the scripted death from houses of healing.
It almost looked like I could have gone child shelters instead of safe jobs but I bottled it and wanted the extra workforce.
No deaths & child shelters in extreme endless seems entirely possible IMO.
Sawmill > Beacon > Heater > Drafting Boards (tech up) > Hothouse > Steam Hub
... is the way to go. I worked out a couple of hothouses on overtime is enough food for everyone. You'll also want bunkhouses before the second storm.
