Also the guide isn't helpful if you are going for deathless since I believe if you do 2 24 hours you get a death (but if you only 24 hour gathering piles you won't get the death so you can 24 hour 5 piles and never get the death)
Scouts can die when they're leaving the map as it takes them FOREVER to actually exit, same when they return after you disband them. Once they're off the map they're 100% safe though. Sending a gravely injured person to scout is almost guaranteed to die if you ever disband the scout unit.
For the scouting deaths you can easily see what I mean when you specifically send off sick folks, you can click on the red medical sign to monitor them and see how long it takes them to exit the map. Often they're half way to their destination before they're actually "on an expedition."
Also at extreme difficulties, I believe it's fairly standard to send your day 1 injured off to scout in scenarios. As scouting is way slower in Endless, I usually don't rush it so healthcare isn't a problem when I get around to it. I'd never send off sick to scout in a big map like Flats.
