Wall Drills and Charcoal Kilns
Roughly speaking, what would be a good ratio to maintain wood levels, or be a bit on the positive side?

They mention that a Coal Thumper can keep 4 Gathering Posts busy, but don't really say the same for Wall Drills and Sawmills for the Kilns.

Because wall drills, sawmills and kilns don't generate resource piles like the thumpers do.
Everything other than thumpers generates the resource directly, you just crew them and that's all you have to do.

Gotcha. Still, there must be a rough number of kilns to drills, yes?

From what I've seen on the wiki, one default sawmill is needed for one default kiln.
And for fully upgraded ones you would need walldrills.

Sawmills are temporary since they rely on a depletable resource.
Therefore, Wall Drills are the one to go for because the resource is infinite. Naturally, at some point in the game, when you have already built most of the city and effectively have no more need for wood, you will of course start building up a surplus. If you want to use that surplus wood to fuel kilns in order to produce coal, then just balance the amount of kilns required to match the output of the Wall Drill.
Then again, by that point you should also be producing more coal than you need to meet consumption,so you could just turn the Wall Drill off and then have no need for kilns.
The choice is yours ;)

I was afraid I was going to have to do math, lol.

If you intend to min/max, then yes you will need to do math. Not just the base values of the building when you unlock it, but also the upgrades to those buildings, and the efficiency upgrades that make them work faster.

I did the the no steam/advanded building achievement at the same time as charcoal, so I would say that not much wood is required, escpecially once it's upgraded.

It actually shows you in the wood resource stats how much you're consuming and producing, you can play it by ear if you want. I want to say 3 fully upgraded kilns used up the wood from a steam wall drill, only time I remember really needing them was on Arks Survivor.

You're correct. I totes forgot about the stat sheet. With automatons on both, its about a 3:1 ratio, and that still leaves a bit of surplus *if Wall Drills have foremen*

Without foremen, its a 2:1 ratio

Stormtempter: I know this is an old post, but I wanted to chime in. I had 2 advanced wall drills going, and had about 4-6 kilns running. It was about perfect for me to pull ahead and get an excess of wood.

Hope that helps!

In your Economy panel, you can see clearly how much wood you're getting (per source, this is also visible on each source), and how much your kilns are consuming (if you also use sawdust for food, this would be counted there as well).

Just balance the two numbers and you'll see. If I remember correctly 2 Advanced Steam Wall Drills can feed 5-6 fully upgraded kilns if all are worked on by automatons.
