And maybe they installed the generators on the north for the local plants and animals, already adapted to the extreme cold
We know it's a place that takes at least a few weeks if not months to get to from london, so it's not scotland.
We know it's a place with lots of coal. One of the key reasons they went north, with the others being MASSIVE volcanic eruptions around the equator blocking out the sun (as told by the loading screens) and far enough away from most of the, now mass panicking, population for them to set up the generators without any major interruptions/distractions.
And we know it has to be a place that the USA can get to, and would need to get to, by sea.
Most likely it's Greenland or Iceland (though my moneys on the former) as they have most, if not all, of the above points.

This, combined with the fact that even today there are vast untapped reserves of Coal in Greenland, the lifeblood of any steam powered society, all but guarantees this to be the location.
