Coal's storage capacity can be increased by 600, all other resources by 300.
The "Resource Upgrade" technology gives you 50% more.
Oh, and you need a *lot* of them.
figured it. still have to get people to pick it up which is stupid considering i have to also have people in the depots
the problem was the gathering posts workers dont gather coal from the coal thumpers :( so having them there was wasting workers cause i needed to put workers on the coal piles also. hoping its a over sight by the devs cause when your in dire need for workers in the 1st place having them on the coal piles and in the gathering posts right there at same time puts a HUGE strain on other places you also need workers that your now short on(at the start anyways). im guessing i still need gather posts there? all the youtube vids had them there.
wish i could just skip it and go to the mines but that dont seem possible as coal is my major bottleneck at the start so far.
So, a more detailed explanation:
1. There is a Coal Thumper. It dumps COAL on a heap just next to it (at its wider end).
2. Build Gathering Posts close to that heap - if there already is coal on the heap, make sure the heap turns green while you are moving the gathering post's "ghost" image around, looking for location to build it - that means the post will be able to collect the coal.
3. You need twice as many gatherers as there are workers in the coal thumper, so if you have 15 available workers, put 5 of them on the thumper and 10 of them to the gathering posts. Later in the game, you will have access to Automatons, machines that work 24/7; if you tell an Automaton to work on the thumper, you will need 2 automatons to gather the coal.
4. Coal Thumpers can be upgraded to Steam Coal Thumpers with DOUBLE yield, which means you would need FOUR times as many gatherers as there workers in such thumper.
If the coal thumper cannot output coal, because the heap next to it is full, it will display the error symbol (circle with a down arrow) on it.
However, that same symbol, displayed ELSEWHERE, means "We have no storage capacity for this particular resource. A Coal Thumper doesn't care about storage capacity, because it doesn't collect the coal into storage depots, but everything else does care about storage capacity.
To increase your storage capacity, you need to build the (rather expensive in terms of wood and steel) Resource Depots. After you build a Resource Depot, it will have a red symbol (that looks like 4 squares in a 2x2 grid) on it. This means you need to select which resource should this resource depot store: Coal, Wood, Steel, Raw Food, or Food Rations? Basic capacity is 900 coal or 300 of any other resource, but with a certain upgrade, this is increase dby 50%, meaning 1350 for coal and 450 for other resources. Click each Resource Depot and select one of the resources, as needed. Be prepared that you will need 30+ Resource Depots late in the game, if you are playing it well: at least 15 for Coal, 4-5 for Steel and Wood, 5+ for Food Rations.
