coal mining or coal thumper?
Guys, these two choices are not far from each other... I am at day 5 and managed not to build tents and started building bunkhouses so i could get "better than london" achievement :) Ok back to my question, in tech tree, I am torn between choosing these two. For me I just want to focus with mining.... what do u guys think?

You will need both, the coal mines are better but because they have limited spots on the map they don't bring in enough coal to keep you supplied at least not with the city I built

yah thats true >.< I just saw that I also need steamcores to build coal mining and at my baby age at day 5, I only have 1. thanks!

Yeah, I usually start with coal thumpers till got more steam cores (My first usually goes to a hothouse) but I build the coal thumper next to a gatherers post that has run out of resources
Kitten Food 5/mai./2018 às 5:56
I go coal thumpers if I have child labor so they can gather all the coal.

Mines are more efficient since you dont need gatherering and require less overall manpower. They are great once you have steel and wood under control.

Coal Thumpers can produce more coal but need way more workers. Just 1 coal thumper already needs 30 people to run at full efficiency
So for me it is more about how big is my workforce, can i run a thumper efficient enough?

Child labour? YOU CROSSED THE LINE #wasnotworthit :P :steamhappy:

I think I've built Coal Thumpers one time. But on my three completed playthroughs I've used Coal Mines. Once you have them worked by Automatons, you don't have to worry about coal ever again.

I went coal thumpers, and the upgraded steam version later. Ended up with 3 thumpers with 10 gathering posts (could support 12) and had an over abundance of coal by the end. Gathering 6k or so and using 4k or so per workday.

Think I'll still go thumpers in my other playthroughs.
Cyba 5/mai./2018 às 6:38
Honestly in my experiences Thumpers give more coal, but require 3-5 times the manpower depending on tier. When I played new home I only needed 2 thumpers to supply more than enough for my colony of over 500, but on the Ark scenario 2 coal mines werent enough by themselves but only needed 2 automatons (as opposed to 10).

Depends on whats available to you I suppose
Hershcream 5/mai./2018 às 7:42
I think two adv Coal mines produce 5kish coal per day this number gos up if u use automations with two Steam Coal thumpers max gathers each with four gather posts i was getting some like 10k coal per day

Also u can use Foremen to push these numbers even higher

I managed to build a city with roughtly 600 people(atthe end of the great strom) and managed to survive with only cole mines and the tech upgrades, a tip if you try that, automatons which are upgraded twice are better then 10 workers...

Automatons are better than 10 engineers, straight from the very beginning.

On normal:
10 engineers gather 24 coal per hour, across a 10 hour workshift. That's 240 coal per day.
1 basic Automaton, without further upgrades, gathers 14,4 coal per hour, across a 24 hour workshift. That's 345,6 coal per day.

Even with extended shifts, 10 engineers still aren't as good as a basic automaton.

Coal thumper are more efficient in total coal per day produced don't require steamcore and need less research. but they consume a lot of manpower 30 then 50, even a single thumper's collec t house is better than a coal mine. you can rotate man power early on to make it work.

Coal mine need less manpower only 10, but they also produce a lot less and they need up to 3 steamcore, 4 if you want o automate them.Even fully upgraded they are inferior in pure coal thumper productivity.

if you want more automates coal mine are maybe not the best choice.

Just finished a main scenario run with 1 advanced coal mine and 1 regular coal mine. My final population was ~630 and I had ~28000 coal left in reserve.

It doesn't matter if you pick mines, kilns or thumpers. Just pick one and stick with it, i.e. ignore the other two techs.

One good reason not to go mines is if you don't have access to a plethora of steam cores. Then thumpers and kilns are much better at the cost of space.

FYI I used 2 advanced automated coal mines and no thumpers...
