Children
I finished the game on hard, but still don't 100% understand children.

Do they need homes? Do Child Shelters coun't as homes, or are they day care only?
Do Houses count as Child Shelters? Asking this one because when it got too cold for Child Shelters, I dismantled them, but I still got a hope bonus for all children being in shelters.
Do children only work as Apprentices if there are Child Shelters? What if only some of the children are in Child Shelters?

The hope bonus is semi bugged. Sometimes you get it despite not fullfilling the need.

Children still do need their own homes. Child Shelters count as their places of work and from within the Child Shelters, they help operate the Medical Posts/Workshops in field trips. So yes, Child Shelters are required for the bonuses to Medics and Engineers.

Let's say 30 children give you a 10% bonus. If only 15% are in Child Shelters, you will only get a 5% bonus.

That's from my experience at least.

Child shelters work as a daycare, like a "work place" for children.
There are bugs here currently, so its hard to be sure if something works as intended, or not. From my observations:
- I am pretty sure, what for apprentices bonus 1 child shelter with 1 child inside is enough to get it. Not sure if bonus could be increased with the number of children in shelters, but it doesnt seems so
- I am pretty sure, you get hope bonus only if all children have place in shelters, if you have at least 1 little pest running loose you will see your hope meter goes down, even if tooltip says "every kid has a place in a shelter". Their parents know better, I guess

It does seem like the bonuses for Children helping out Medics/Engineers from within their Child Shelters, are a-linear.

My first 30 children added maybe a 10% bonus to research. When I discovered the Shrouded cave and took another 30 with me, the bonus climbed to less than 15%. It might just be the nature of research though and every child DOES add the same bonus to medical posts.

I just don't want them running around with infectious, gory materials. :D If I were a kid, I would've much preferred helping out in the workshops.

Immentale is correct. If you only want the bonus to medic/engineer just one shelter will do. But if you want the hope bonus, you need to house all children. As an added info, if you accept everyone and had nobody died in the New Home scenario, you will need exacty 15 children shelters.

Huh, I hadn't realized this. I just tested by demolishing a couple of my Child Shelters, but yes. A single one gives the same bonus as several. It doesn't seem to matter HOW many children you have in child shelters, except one.
