Gathering posts: Worth it?
I can't say I see the point in building them, does any one else do so?

Yes they are, for many reasons, such as extra protection from cold, and faster gathering speed.

Gathering posts gather things faster and requires lest workers and are essential for start of the game.

Really? I sort they would be a waste of resources to build. I completed the whole game without them :D

In the beginning you're short of workers. Processing a single pile directly takes 15 workers to max it and the workers are unprotected. Using a gathering post only takes 10 to max, you usually can get 2-3 piles inside the area of effect, and the post can be heated.

Even after getting more workers they're still useful in collecting the coal from thumpers.

I thought this was going to be a summary of "Worth it?" posts. lol

I build two of them next to a coal thumper since the game says it can handle two.

Sounds like a plan.

Wait, does the thumper pile need to be manned if its next to a post then or not?

no, just the thunper itself + the posts

And you get around 80% resources back, when you dismantle buildings, so no need to worry about GP costs.

I first built Coal thumpers abit before the storm when im swimming in resources xD.
There is so much coal on the ground on both medium and hard that you have time to get the coal mine before running out. And since a Coal thumper is 30 workers total (10 for the mine, + 10X2 for the gatherings posts) its just way to many workers early on to be worth it. You want to maximize early on.

But yeah Gathering posts are very good to pick up the resources on the ground quickly. And since you get most (or all?) resources back when destorying them its not a loss of resources to built them.

This thing is now the first thing I build. At the beginning, there are about 10 crates spread in 4 clusters, so instead of using 45 worker to take directly from only 3 piles at a time, I can use the gathering posts and use 40 workers to take from all the piles all at once. Plus, they're insulated, reducing the number of gravely ills.

Oh my God did I made a mistake thinking they were redundant.
You gather from all sources nearby at once.
Workers don't have to walk all the way.
Protection from cold.
Saving on manpower. One post gathering from three sources means 10 people gather enough for 45.

They are absolutly crucial on hard mode.

I thought that you needed them when it comes to gathering coal from the plants that 'pump' it out of the ground?
I've been building like two of those, and then putting 2-3 gathering posts right behind them...as the plants just seem to gather tons of coal in the back if I don't.

Or am I missing something here?
