The Arks - New Manchester relief
So, I was playing the second scenario and found New Manchester and got the optional quest to help them.

*gather 600 wood, metal and an automaton, and send it in a relief expedition*

"Ok, I can do that. A bit expensive but no prob"

Once I sent that, I got part two

*gather 2000 food, 2 automatons and send it in a relief expedition*

"TWO THOUS- are they nuts? And two automatons?! And there's still a third part? Yeah no, f*ck that"

Is the quest unreasonable, or am I just bad?

The game you have to make hard choices. First time I finished that one. I did not save them. (send the first relief, but not the second)

But I am sure if can be done

I know I know, but this doesn't seem like a choice to me (again, I'm probably just bad). Abandon them or lose the game. One of the citizen told me to "remember our purpose", so I did - protect the Arks

Isn't too tough, key is to get your scouts out as quickly as possible and set up your first coal mine, wall drill, hothouse and steel mine ASAP with automatons. Don't skimp on the research for the automatons either when the guy offers. You need 2 scout parties, and make sure they have lighter sleds for quicker getting of things. You'll need to get steam coal mines and steam steel mines. You'll need about 4 hothouses. Automaton all hothouses and the cookhouse. With 2 steam coal mines and 2 steam steel mines and normal Wall Drill, you should have about 2 days left over after saving New Manchester. Do not focus on Coal Thumper or saw mill tech. Just drill down through your heating, your coal, steel and housing. If you set your storage up right, I sent the last coal (6k of it) when I had 12k in storage and regained that 2k I was short and the 500 food again within the time needed.

Good luck!

Try playing it again, knowing how it will end. You should find it really isn't hard to do. You already have the automaton force with a steady flow of reinforcements from your factory fulfilling all your material needs, so the most difficult bit will be building enough storehouses.
And you'll need 6000 coal for the last mission. Hauled away by four automatons. Have fun!

SIX THOUSAND COAL AND FOUR AUTOMATONS?!

RIP New Manchester, your sacrfice for the Arks will not be forgotten

Lol, thats an easy task if you have 20 automatons work 24h the day.

How do you even send the automations. I tried sending the first one, made a scout automaton and sent it to new manchester but it didn't do anything.

You have to go to the Beacon and press the button to the right of the *create scout team* button. There, it will show if you have enough resources and if so, you click to send them and they will go to New Manchester automatically (you can't recall them or redirect them)

Yep. Four thousand coal and six automatons. I think that's what it was. The Arks was pretty easy; I haven't played it in a while. (Fixed typo)
Whoa, Disturbed? I'm a huge fan of yours!
Anyway, take it from us. It's possible.

You need to deploy the automatons from your beacon. Click on your beacon building. You'll see a toggle to change from making normal scouts, then automaton scouts, then the third option is to send the automaton(s) and required resources.

It was hard only because you did not know beforehand that it is comming.
I mean I did not bother concentrating on coal or food because I did not need it at that time yet so sending first help was super easy and then I was stuck for week before I got enough food only to find out that now I need coal in large numbers too.

In next playthrough it would be much easier if you know that it is coming.
Also as other said, make scouts. Make 3 of them. Make them faster. Use your engineers for them since they are cheaper to create and work less then automaton. And get all those steamparts while pumping more and more automatons.

You can easily have 10 automatons just for your city. 2* coal mines, 2* steel mines, 2*lumber mill (do not bother with wall drill since lumber mills will last till end of game) and anything over you can rotate on cookhouses/hothouses/coalthumpers/coal gathering/infirmary

And after that more automatons simply means faster gathering and thats it.
Also do not go crazy for research. Timeline for Ark scenario is not long enough to discover everything.

It's doable, the problem is that these numbers are arbitrary and the entirety of certain scripted events makes no sense in this scenario.
Example: Have xyz amount of zyx before the storm even though automatons will still do their job so this whole thing is unnecessary artificial immersion breaking restriction.

There is no coherency between these scenarios due to these rulesets/mutators.

Additionally you have very little chance to finish it in the first run as you do not know certain arbitrary rules applied to these events.

I think the idea is to stockpile goods in case the automatons fail at some point, mitigate risks, that good stuff. Bunch of scientists, not surprising they'd want to do that, in my opinion. It's unfortunately that you can't see the results of not stockpiling stuff though, other than a game over screen.

And OP, it's doable (I've done it on medium difficulty), but it can be difficult to achieve.

I managed to help New Manchester. Wasn't easy but if you prepared you can do it on the second walkthough. Don't think it's possible on the first run just like it's absolutely impossible to finish This War of Mine without robbery, murder and selfishness on the first try.
Whitetailfox Apr 29, 2018 @ 1:17pm
I'm not sure myself why that is such a difficult request, I just finished the mission helping New Manchester with 5 days to spare on the first try. With automatons you can generate ridiculous amounts of supplies and if you invest into research and scouts early on you'll have more than enough of everything you need.

Remember, always aim over the goals given, not for them. It's a game about being prepared for the unexpected.
Azov Apr 29, 2018 @ 1:19pm
I managed to send relief and save the arks on first attempt on normal, when I didn't know it beforehand. And later did the same on hard difficulty but I was on very thin ice for that one and I did know all I needed beforehand.
