I think the reason you had enough food is because enough people died, can't think of any other reason.
150 gravely ill is nothing, try the 'Central Heating' achievement, I had over 250 gravely ill and they dropped like flies as everything shut down, still the city survive (450 left of 680).
Which isn't what OP described happening in his game, with not enough food to last it is only logical to assume it was death, and therefore less people to feed, that allowed his food storage to last.
The long long shot is that the religion was so powerful that they did a Jesus and split 2 fishes and a single loaf of bread to feed potentially thousands of people. I mean think about it. If the City is all that remains of humanity in the world then wouldn't that consequently mean that belief in a God by 502/502 residents would give that god more relative faith points/power to perform miracles?
