They do heat things up. If you select one you can switch the working hours, maybe you just built it during "free time". You can also run them 24h or during long shifts if you want.

Also, if you are in the heat overview mode you can switch each one on and off entirely, just make sure the little button is in the "up" position, then it's on and per default it will work during the 8:00-18:00shift.

What they don't do either is heat-overlap. So if a hub radius and the generator radius overlap, the intersection won't get warmed from both, only once.

people wont freeze on pits for example, preventing illness caused by coldness.

At first I thought they provide extra heat so you could stack it with your main generator, but it doesn't work that way. Think of them as an extension of your gerator's heat aura, increasing the heat of the main generator increases the heat of the steam hubs as well, but they don't stack with each other.

I think my game bugs. I put steam hubs around the streets with just abit an overlapping circumference but everything is still chilly or freezing

What's likely happening is that the temperatures are so low and the insulation of work places and homes you are building is so poor that even the heat from Steam hubs isn't enough. This depends on how late in the game you are, of course. There is only so much you can do.

Can someone point me in the right direction then as to whats really important? Like should i get two workshops early on? Are houses worth it? etc

I started with Gathering post, 2 workshops, wait for residents to ask for houses then get the amount required, then beacon as my early start.

Steam Hubs give the same heat level as the generator. You have to upgrade the generator's heat levels for steam hubs to generate more heat. I usually use them to heat up work places during work hours, but if you want them to heat up homes, that's a possibility too. The generator's max heat range is 4, so if you wanna build homes beyond that radius, you'll need steam hubs to warm them. Their heat levels don't stack with the generator, but they do stack with radiators (so does the generator's heat levels) which makes steam hubs useful to make small "neighbourhoods" of medical houses, gathering posts or houses.

a steam hub is compareable to your generator in small, if your generator is on heatpower 2 the steam hub will be also heat level 2, if the generator goes into overdrive so will the steam hub. overall steam hubs are better then heaters cause they are related to its main generator but cost more coal then heaters but also heat more then 1 building.

when you select a building, hower your mouse over the temperature icon and you can see what contributes to it's heat. For example +2 building insulation +1 in heating area -4 weather. That way you can see what you are missing. Houses are worth it of course, each tents provide +1 base insulation, bunkhouses +2 and houses +3, with another ugprade houses provide +4 endgame

id say go for even 3 workshops in early game, the thing you have the least in this game is time. as faster you research as more you get done before the final days

Workshops are never enough. Build as many as you can afford, without sacrificing too much production, at the start you got few people. Build tents and medical center (turn it on and assign workers only when needed). Sign a new law everytime the cooldown is off. Build a beacon and reserch more scout, it's important to have 2 teams as soon as possible.

In the end, the most important thing is ACTING, not reacting. The games gives you little chance to react to emergencies, you must be always ready. If you understand how to be preemptive you will discover that the game isn't hard at all, at least at normal difficult
