Depot stores one of selected resources, Gathering post serves as a shelter for people collecting resources in short range (so they don't freeze collecting the piles).
Thumper needs workers inside of it to create coal piles next to itself and then you need to gather that coal, preferably using Gathering posts (multiple, game suggests 2 for basic thumper and 4 for advanced).
Sawmill only collects from frozen trees in range, if it runds out that's it, you need to dismatle it and build a new one in a place that still has trees.
There's an option to play in easy mode, check scenario customization options when launching the game :)
First, steam cores are find by your scouts in others locations , you can't make them.
Ressources depot are storages, gathering posts are for the ressources on the floor.
To run the coal thumper you have to make two gathering post near it.
For timber mill ( hope you mean sawmill, sorry i'm not english) you have to put them near frozen trees, highlighting them in green.
Resource depot increases the amount of resources you can store (have to set what type of resource it is.
Gathering post collects resources from all resource piles in range. (it has full effect on every pile)
Coal Thumper creates a coal pile nearby. You need 2 gathering posts to collect the coal as fast as the thumper makes it.
Timber mill (saw mill) you need to build it in range of the frozen trees or it cant harvest them. TBH I prefer the drill mill.
