Ring 1: 10 homes (or 8 homes and 2 med facilities) and appears unaffected by the "spread" issue. 40 squares for 2 deep
Ring 2: 15 homes - have to build them all at once or the spread will leave an empty spot that almost fits another house. 60 squares for 2 deep
Ring 3: 21 homes - does not appear to be affected by the spread but will leave 1 space btwn. 85 squares for 2 deep (i may alter this to have the temple there and replace 2 of the homes so i can use up all the space)
Ring 4: 21 homes, 1 public house and 5 houses of worship (have not totally tested how many houses of worships i need.. might be 1 less or 1 more). 110 squares for 3 deep.
Ring 5: will contain all the child shelters, workshops, cookhouses, hunters, etc and be heated by 8 or so steam hubs that will also cover coal mines, steel mills, and wall drills. 148 suares for 3 deep.
I love what they did with streets where they just nudge buildings over.. would love to see them have something similar for buildings where it is so close
After that I tend to group houses about 3/4 wide going out so that I can place a steam hub in the middle and keep all my peeps warm or place a tower for max hope/discontent effect. and
i keep all work buildings that need to be heated clumped together. clumping, while ugly looking (i Know, its a CIRCLE. so tempting) is incredibly effective when you need to keep places warm with effective use of steamhubs that limits coal usage.
