If you complete one ahead of schedule, that doesn't necessarily mean you have longer to complete the next, but it might mean you have to begin the next one a little earlier instead because of that.
So, yes, it might be in your best interest to wait. However, there are some things you need to rush for, if only for the sake of getting certain Steam achievements. Saving or not saving New Manchester for example ;)
Ultimately though, the clock is ticking in every scenario and the game ending storm is coming no matter how fast or slowly you play it ;)
To give an example from the first map as its one you have already see (as i assume you have played map 1 to not spoil anything).
If you wait till day 14 to send a scout to new manchester the final storm will happen later than if you send one there on day 5. As the final storm happens a set amount of time after you first go there. As such its in your best interest to get as much as possible done before sending a scout there than only doing on at the last min. Not going there by 14 the game will still "force" you to move on by sending a messager that dies this has some negative consequences so its norm "better" to find them on your own at the last sec to gain a advantage.
This is only one example of the times its better to wait than move on.
