Is it worth it to replace tents with houses?
Is it worth the cost in wood and steel to tear down tents and replace them with better-insulated houses? I'm looking for coal-saving tips so I can survive the big blizzard at the end of the New Home scenerio.

For coal saving tips use coal thumpers 4 gathering posts per thumper you will need 3. Staff with autos or use extended shift. This should get you all the coal you need.

Otherwise never get gen range it’s worse than heating with steam hubs in every case. Same with steam hubs over heaters if 4 buildings or more

If you build the houses on top of the tents and/or bunkhouses it costs less wood (also metal if building a house on a bunkhouse).

There's a lot of building in this game where you can just build the better version right on top of the lesser version. Such as all resource building and (the one most of us miss the first time) guard stations and watchtowers.

It dosent really cost less materials the cost of the base building is just taken out of the upgrade cost the total cost is the same. But yes it is cheaper than selling to replace as selling is not 100 percent return

The Steam Powered Thumper is OP. I used it in the Refugee scenerio, and went from barely having enough coal to maxing out my inventory every day (with a large depot devoted to coal as well).

I didn't know I could do that. Thanks for the tip.

Well steam thumpers are not really op on the refugees map you have a ton of labor and the drawback of steam thumpers is they need a lot of labor 50 people to staff them but 40 of them can be kids allowing for child labor to shine witch that map also has a lot of kids as a bonus. A new home there also strong is as durring the final storm coal mines have issues as a event. As you where asking about a new home mentioned them.

Norm using steam cores on coal mines is a better bet esp on maps you have a lot of them on. New home you have a lot of cores from Tesla city but better uses on autos plus thumpers due to the event. One of the probs with thumpers are you need 6 tech upgrades to make them fully effective to make a advanced coal mine but the coal mine only needs 10 people. 3 mines and your set hell 2 can do. Coal mines only need 3 tech as the eff upgrades do little.

Coal thumpers also take a lot of space so need two hubs for three thumper vs if using hunter huts with cores on coal mines the hunter huts don’t need to be heated saving you more coal to boot. Via not needing to heat hothouse and your two coal mines norm fit into the same hub. Your kids than can be used in house of healing to free up eng for tech. Hunter huts don’t get sick people when. It heated for the most part also reducing the sick you have to futher increase the labor you have. Plus can free up med staff for even more.

Due to this thou thumpers are good on the refugees I still use coal mines over them plus the outpost letting you have more hunters and Houses of healing ready to deal with the lords.

Both methods for coal work it just depends on map. Arcs endless and fall of winter it’s coal mines all the way with thumpers for a new home. Refugees both work fine. Always wall drill over sawmills thou.

Another thing people forget is the carcoal kiln. It’s worth it once you got spare wood only slightly less labor effective than coal thumpers but you don’t need any upgrades for it as all the upgrades do is make you convert more wood per hour the ratio remains the same so only would up them if still extra wood after placing one.
