Worth it?
Im a xcom fan who just saw this game and it looks interesting enough but I read it was chess..
Is it chess??

Can you select your soldiers before the 'fight'? Do the surviving soldiers level up and develop themselves?

Or is it just a chess-like game?

hi i only played 1 game so far (i managed to win with just 2 characters remaining) :)

but its got several modes of play.
one is just like chess (with w40k animations and characters)
and the other allows you to select characters to do different tactics, like hunker down, or to lob grenades across the board, and do some damage to selected targets..(it still supports a chess move which can be lethal) but even if you cant make a chess move attack, you can still seem to shoot with that character and if enough characters target the same enemy character you can reduce them to 0

btw theres a live devchat here which mentions discussions about upgrades etc that might help

Hey Cheox,

So as your asking is the game like xcom, its not really apart from the turn based movement and abilities. The units all move like chess pieces during the movement phase, limited to one unit per turn like chess.

The difference from chess comes from the Initiative phase in which the player has access to a number of abilities. During this phase the player is given Initiative Points, or IP, to spend on abilities.

Abilities come in two types, Unit Abilities and Player Abilities.

Unit Abilities are activated by selecting a unit during the initiative phase and then spending IP to use said ability, they range from the universal Snapshot ability to the unit specific such as Life Leech on the Librarian.

Meanwhile, Player abilties are global abilities that can affect single or multiple units. Examples of this include the "You call dat a wound" ability which heals Orks for a certain amount of wounds or the "Armour of Contempt" which gives a single space marine a shield that can block damage.

Each unit has varying stats, these stats are:
-Health
-Armour
-Toughness
-Weaponskill
-Weapon Strength

They all determine different aspects of what units can and can't do, for more detail the Librarium which is available in game has more detail. {LINK REMOVED} You can also access the Librarium online from that link.

In terms of is it worth it? Well I will leave that up to you to decide. If there was anything else I could help with or explain feel free to ask.

The Emperor Protects,
Mkoll

Excellent - ill go and polish me Nalwood (lol) just joking.

Have spent an afternoon playing, so its worth a Fiver, maybe a bit more.

Am not stoked about the animations, dialogue etc, but if that's your bag it'd bump the value up a bit.

I bought it because wanted it today, its probably more sense to wait for the basics to be ironed out, and a Sale when you could get the basic game and DLC at a lower price as this isn't going to be a big seller.

Thanks for the feedback. The game really looks interesting and the price is not bad either.

Honestly at this stage of the EA-the game really isn't worth the money. The only thing that might interest you so far are the kill animations which quite frankly are one of the best ever made, they really satisfy the need for gore in the game. What you are looking in the pictures for the game however is not entirely in the game as of this moment-for instance the map really doesn't have the obstacles shown and is just a simple chessboard with some snow effect which I have to admit are really bad looking. The developers focused a lot more on the character models rather than try to immerse you in the enviroment but they will probably fix that in the future.Another thing to note is that a lot of the player abilities are not in the game right now even though earlier videos actually showed them as implemented and fully working if I am not mistaken. You will get a total of 4 abilities to use and the other 8 are not usable. There is also only one objective in the game so far and that is to capture/kill the king which is the basis of chess therefore by this alone I can consider that Regicide isn't fully implemented into the game. Also there is no Level up system, ranks and different visuals for the character you will be using. The campaign is also missing at this moment but we were promised by the developers that it would be introduced in some point soon and seeing as the game plans to be in EA for 2-4 months, soon should really mean very son(if they don't run into some problems ofc). There are some bugs in the game as well which might not result in it crashing or breaking the gameplay but are pretty annoying ones-for instance the terminator when firing always finishes with a couple of round into the ground which is quite ugly to see actually and started bothering me more and more as I was using the figure.Sometimes character will disappear into the ground and will pop up on their spot which is quite weird. Also for some reason I am getting really low frames in the game, talking about 10-20 fps.It seems I am not the only one with this issue and keep in mind this is the only game I know so far that cannot be added in the Nvidia Control Panel to maximize it's performance or change which graphics card is running the game.

Hope this helps mate :)

In my opinion this game is really worth the money. But you have to consider, that i like chess and maybe it is not your cup of tea. If the devs implement a user-friendly way to use external chess-engines, like stockfish, till full-release, this game could be my personal wet dream. But as i said, I like chess and i think its even today the king of abstract strategy. So yeah.....finally a good bloody Battlechess with real potential.

I bought it because I love WH40k. It is pretty boring at the moment. I'd like a mode without any chess related gameplay restrictions (such as movement) and a larger board with terrain that affects combat. It is not expensive, but I don't see myself playing much as it stands. I would prefer to play Bloodbowl than this.

You guys knew exactly what kind of game it was before you bought, they're very up front about what you are getting.

Hey Guys, we hear you.

We're currently offering a 10% discount during Early Access for these exact reasons. Although the game is playable and fun right now, we recognize that we are an Early Access product. As such we've got lots of content that's on its way shortly. To thank everyone for early adoption, we're including extra content and achievements in this phase that will not be accessible outside of EA.

That said, it is an Early Access game so if you'd rather not join us on our development journey and join us later during the full game launch that's perfectly fine too. :)

I have a very deep hope of seeing a campaign soon or at least an armoury update. You got to give us something to enjoy the Regicide mode :)
Knutticus May 6, 2015 @ 2:31am
The Regicide Game would work better on a larger board. Ideally with the pieces moving a bit quicker, and the option of cutting out the dialogue and Death scenes.

The big problem though is its overpriced.

At best you've a £5 game which should make its money from DLC, and a big player community.

By all means give us exclusive Steam achievements, Foil Cards and other shiny stuff, but sort the price out.
