Dynasty Warriors: Tactics & Tactics II
Two of the most fun games I ever played growing up was these two games listed in the subject line. They were only out for Playstation 2, I believe thats the case anyway. I sincerely wish that these games would be re-released on steam. Am I the only one that remembers and enjoyed those games? Please tell me im not the only one.

I remember them, but I don't feel like the were the greatest. They had their moments, sure, but if anything I'd rather they bring back the RoTK series. Mainly 8 and 10 (just downloaded a PS2 emulator and 10 to play at work since I can't bring my PS2 for obvious reasons >.>) Where Tactics had it's focus on a grid based war simulation which all you would do is move around and complete maps and challenges, something that Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics both had (and still have) done very well with, RoTK had more focus on ALL aspects of the war. Most of the games you play as a ruler and fight to unite China, pretty standard stuff, but in 8 and 10 you play as a single character which is why I liked them so much. Similar to Empires, but it was a lot more in depth and even if you were a scrub, you still felt more involved with the game and how battles played out rather than just powering up until you become a one-man army like in the DW games. Still love killing thousands of men as a stress relief and making custom characters, but if they added more RoTK with the territory development, relationships meaning something, and the freedom to wander around and do more in the world into the Empires series, I'd think it would come out to be a far more beautiful game. Imagine being your character and walking around towns, even if they were generic. Visiting officers in other forces and eventually saying "Hey, me and you, we're good buds, right? Come join us then!"

I could go on all day about how RoTK deserves more love, especially 8 and 10 being my two favorites, but sadly I have a job to do. Maybe later...

So you never once mentioned what RoTK is. I am not saying dynasty tactics were in the top percentage of games but they were some of my favorites. I also really enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics and an even older title that was on the N64 called, "Ogre Battle". Just really fun games that I miss dearly and wish that somehow someway that they could find a new home on steam.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it's basically the original story of Dynasty Warriors, a game series named after that actual book that was written about the actual events. The game itself is very much about taking control of a leader (or making your own custom leader which has been around since RoTK2 on the SNES) and taking over the land. But 8 and 10 shine for me because they made the game feel more open, where you played as one man (or woman) and had to find your own way, doing whatever you want. You could be a rogue warrior who travels the lands in search of a challenge by dueling, or travel the land learning and debating others, maybe eventually joining an army if you want. You could start out as a ruler, building on the lands you own, but you can only issue commands, the power you have is limited by the abilities of your generals, which makes it feel more realistic and exciting. The entire game feels far more open than the others by making it more about focusing on you and your character and not the whole army gameplay of the others. But the battles are also like tactics games, trying to surround your enemies, launching attacks, setting traps, ambushes, etc. Even RoTK 2 had a lot of military freedom in how you would win your battles.

Anyways, long story short, the main goal of the game is still to unite China, but it's more focused on YOUR part in the story rather than how Dynasty Tactics is a set of missions and DW:Empires is more about becoming a one-man army. And RoTK, especially 8 and 10, have so much more replay value because there is so much to do, so many experiences to have, and no game ever goes the same way twice and there's no "easy way to win". You gotta build your army and not just finding high War stats because every stat is useful in it's own way.

But yeah, I wish games like Ogre Battle would make a comeback, I miss those games. Ogre Tactics just wasn't the same, I liked how OB had a very unique style and made you think of lots of things like troop placements and who performed what tasks.

Maybe the upcoming R-Type Tactics, which is based on a shoot-em-up that places heavy emphasis on positioning and baiting enemies.
