@LRNK: I had the same thing happening! But I wonder if it was just luck or if the high friendship had a role to play in the fact that this specific officer became Ruler…
My friendship was C with him since I did argue with his choices a lot and tried to press on to capital city conquest instead of minor province warfare, I thought he was about banish me when that option suddenly showed up. o_o
So… I guess you just got a lot of Merit during the battles, it would explain the quick rise to Marshal. But it's interesting to read that friendship is not (that?) important for this matter! I was persuaded of the opposite.
Best and easiest is join kingdom > do lots of quest and befriend with ruler > quit the job > and wait for ruler to come with promotion.
I got around 4k per fight as I really totalled the field, took all the officers down personally and completed special missions given by both lui bei and mr greenfeatherfan ( don't remember how his name is spelled )
I tried to rebel to get the event, but nooo, can't rebel against your own mother.. xD
