Dynasty Warriors died at 5 for me
While I still like the series, I really feel that the best Dynasty Warriors game ever is 5. 5 actually plays like the historical drama the game was meant to be. The music in 5 was the best and so was the character designs. You know what 5 also had? Character emotions and expressions and great dialogue. I really wish they would just remake 5.

Except in actual history, ShangXiang didn't "live a life" at all. After Liu Bei died, she jumped off a bridge and commited suicide by drowning.

What a coincidence, 8 is my favorite as well.

In actual history, I don't believe we know how Lady Sun died. Or when she died. Or even what her name was.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a work of fiction based on historical records and other stories (and written around a thousand years after the actual events). It was also written to portray Liu Bei as an ideal man and leader. Thus you have its account of Lady Sun committing suicide after she learns of Liu Bei's death.

From TV Tropes, The version used as the basis for the English translation is actually the 17th century version of the novel, extensively edited for readability by Mao Lun and his son, Mao Zhonggang. While the text overall improved as a result, Zhonggang excised some passages, sometimes lengthy ones, that dramatically changed the character of certain scenes in the novels. He even added a couple of passages, such as where Lady Sun drowns herself after observing the burning of the Shu army at Yiling (thinking that Liu Bei had perished in the fire), in order to cast her in the light of the romantic ideal of the Confucian wife.

Final Fantasy died at 8 for me - the rest that came after were either too kiddy or too emo.

Dynasty Warriors 5 was indeed the high point of the series.

Yeah I stand corrected. I was basing what happened to her off the novels I read. Actual history says after she left Liu Bei to go back to Wu, she was never heard from again.

I couldn't agree more with you. The dynasty warriors 5 empires also was the best empire series I have ever played. The emotions and personality was felt strongly.

final fantsy 10 was one of the best in my opinion, 8 was okay but much like 9, didn't care for the battle system, and that killed the game.

Dynasty warrios 4 was the last one i played for a long time, 5 and 6 never grabbed me, but 8 has rekindled my enjoyment of the series. The series may not update as much as other games, but this is a series that seeks to refine it's gameplay, shifting the focus of the story to keep itinteresting enough that they can continue to refine the gameplay. The story will get old and stale after awhile, and it won't be completely accurate to the original fictional story.

Dynasty warriors is a heroic dream, and it's about the gameplay, finding a character that you can relate to. I honestly find myself relating to guan yu, because he was one of the first characters i ever leveled all the way up on dw2/dw3

Yeah I stand corrected. I was basing what happened to her off the novels I read. Actual history says after she left Liu Bei to go back to Wu, she was never heard from again.

The actual record is... At year 212AD, when Liu Bei move his force into Yi Province, Sun Quan
send a small unit to pick up Lady Sun and try to bring her back to Wu, but Lady Sun was trying to bring Liu Shan with her as well, so Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei lead their force to intercept the Wu unit and retrieved Liu Shan, this event was as know as 趙雲截江奪阿斗, But there was no more record about Lady Sun afterword...

But anyway, Lady Sun and Liu Bei never had any happy relationship in real history, Lady Sun was nothing but just an agent of Wu send by her brother to keep an eye on Liu Bei, the history record says she always carry weapon with her, and she will have her weapon at range of hands reach even when in bed with Liu Bei, and Liu Bei fears her other then love her, this might explant how come she can leave Liu Bei so easily and also trying to take Liu Shan as hostage without 2nd thought.

So face it, in real history she was never a idol of love, but more or less some kind of spy from 007 movie. :summerskull:

My rank:

1. DW8 (includes empires and XL)
2. DW5 (includes empires and XL)

Never played DW4 and below so cant rank them.

I skip the main games and never play XL because it's just the main game again with the focus on certain people. Empires is the only reason many DW and even SW fans play still. Though looking at DW8E I can see the series is taking yet another bad toll. BUT then again DW series is going to be 20 in 2017, so it's only natural for something that's being constantly made for many many years to lose quality and mess up. Hopefully they'll stop DW and move onto new IPs or their other games.

I've played the following

DW2, DW3, DW3 XL, DW4, DW4E, DW5, DW5E, DW6E, DW7, DW7E.
SW1, SW2, SW2E.
Mystic Heroes, DW Advance, DW Next, Warriors Orochi 1, Gundum, Strikeforce, DW Online.
