How do I get troops to follow me?
In any battle, I look at the other officers and they're all followed by a bunch of cannon fodder. How do I get cannon fodder to follow me? The D-pad orders don't seem to do anything in this regard...

You cant, you can only command the officers which can manually be done via the issuing orders option at the menu.

If you want troops in a place, use the stratagem Summon. It'll teleport an allied commander and their troops to your location. It's about the best you're going to get.

Tell me one dynasty warriors or samurai warriors game where the cannon fodders follows after you, other than the enemy's cannon fodder that is, they sure do love to come in close xD.

Been playing these two series some years now and its always been the -1 vs 1000 ikkitousen-hack & slash fighting

Go to pause menu and order (i think its called individual commands) one of your officers to Escort you... then the troops with him will also follow both of you! :)

This is also bound to the D-Pad if you have a Xbox 360 / PS3 controller.

you don't need troops in this game.
i can easly solo whole map (if not for base capture defeat :< )
horses is instagib early game.
but usually i capture whole map in 7 years.
OK well to clarify a couple things

1) This my first dynasty warriors/samurai warriors game. So that explains why I don't have any reference w/r/t the earlier entries in the series.

2) I definitely don't need troops now on easier difficulty, but I was mostly wondering about harder difficulties.

Thanks to all the responders.

Samurai Warriors 2 Empires actually has 1 unit follow you. Next time you're on a map, have all your guys on the bottom and you go to the top. You'll have at least group of 5 that follows you, and if they die, a new group will respawn and decrease your troop count.

Don't remember if it happens in the other games, haven't played them in a while.

if you are in a station of power (ruler, possibly marshal, prefect and stratigest) you should be able to give quick commands during combat, Attack, Delegate, Escort and Defend. if you want people to run around with you I'd suggest to get in a position of power and then go with the escort command.

generally speaking though I just let them do their thing or defend key points while I do most of the work xD

That's DW logic in a nutshell. But be careful on Chaos. Freaking hate how that works out.

As for cannon fodder following you... A DW game never has them following you. You are a one man army in these games. Highest KO count in empires? 3.5k KOs or so.

The only kind of cannon fodder that ever followed you around where the 3-5 nameless bodyguards you had in earlier titles, and they eventually became elites.

I remember those guys, mine beat maps for me, usually killing generals before I have a chance to see them. Miss those guys :P

You used to have bodyguards in the older games. They got rid of them later on and made you a 1 Man Army. The bodyguards in DW4 could be edited, chaging name, weapon, color, and model.

You also had troops follow you in Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires! They made you 1 Man Army later on in Empires as well. Sad that you the ruler can't have a elite group follow you....you'd think the ruler be well guarded but nope....just...just no.

You can have another officer escort you and his troops will follow them thus following you.

Almost. DW5 gave you a single, more powerful bodyguard, and DW8XL allowed you to have up to 3 named officers (be they NPCs or playable officers) following you around.
