A huge slap in the face by the developers
I bought Don't Starve + Don't Starve: Reign of Giants DLC to support the game once I caught wind of multiplayer being in development. Now it's in Early Access and I must pay $5.00 or wait? Is this some kind of joke?

True but unfortunatly to my knowlegde money can't code..... very sad which is why I wrote the option that I did since it is reasonable and possible but since it is just hypothetical we could say that they hired an exceptional coder/graphic artist/writer that gets it done sooner but still I was only talking hypothetically and agree that it would be in thier best interest to finish this sooner (but not rushed and lacking content that they wanted to add).

I'm just saying the finances of the company are not something that the actual coders, artists, designers, etc. concern themselves with. They're all on salary and they're going to work as fast as they can to get the game out regardless of whether the company suddenly gets an influx of money or not, just because their project manager is cracking the whip to get the feature backlog stories completed on schedule. Maybe it means they'll put in some overtime to get it done that much quicker ... only way I can see the money affecting them.

Your welcome and just to note I am taking out the portions that are my comments you have in there just to make this shorter.

Alright, in good faith I just bought it, so I'm now part of the team.

Not gonna reply to everything because we'd both just lose our time. Yes in their shoes I would have never announced this for free, not at the state they were at, which made it hard to estimate how much it'll end up costing. They're super nice for that offer, I'm really not denying that. And yeah, I would've charged more than $5, but I'm managing about $40M worth of projects a year so I'm not used to that kind of ballpark. I agree with people like you, it's a lot of hassle just to get $5 here and there.

Ask them again today and they'll probably say the free offer was too early / a bad idea, the beta sign-up was a nice move that back-fired, and the EA idea was simply poorly executed and communicated.

I'm repeating myself but I just don't buy the scammers excuse. I'm stubborn like that, and yes there's a chance that I'm wrong, but in my businessman eyes there's a ton of red flags. I just checked eBay and yeah, there are some completed auctions in the $50 range. 37 sold in the past month, average about $20-$25 each (the $50 ones are for 2 keys), with no way to be sure if those were really paid for or not. I'm getting old so maybe eBay isn't the cool spot anymore but at least there, considering we're talking about 160k keys handed out, it's not really a major concern. The price isn't outrageous either, we see GameStop pre-order DLC codes selling for that much regularly.

So anyway, some people here will whine no matter what, others will defend anything, some will be capable of having a calm and normal discussion about it like you did, and as far as I'm concerned, I'm mostly disappointed in how it was communicated, but if my small $5 contribution can help improve the game, great! I just wished that they asked for it this way instead, because for me that's what it feels like.

Hope everyone else won't have to wait too long before they get their free keys. :)

I think we are misunderstanding what the other is posting so I am just gonna leave it as this before we start to confuse eachother even more.

Alright it is a personal choice to do it or not but I am sure you won't be dissapointed (as far as to the game being finished not about how they impliment the multiplayer I have no gaurantees for it since to my knowlegde this is the first multiplayer game they have made)

I don't find it a waste of time since right now I do have free time to do with as I please and since we are having a calm discussion I don't see how that is a waste of time.

Guess that just comes with your job?

I am only going off of how they have handled other EA games that they made and I don't think it will happen but can't say it is 175% impossible this is just like any EA a belief that they will finish it.

Just comes with the job you work in and considering I am not a businessman like you I won't see the same red flags that you do (which probably are right otherwise you wouldn't stay in your position for long) but from *my own* experiances I have had with Klei they seems to be one of the nicer game Devs

True, True, True, and thanks.

I agree it would be nice if they had done a little better at the PR or even just not given out the extra beta keys limiting it to one key per person who signed up.

I really don't have any issues with their decision. $5 is so miniscule to an individual that there really is no reason to complain. Nobody who purchased the game is obligated to buy early access to the multiplayer update. It's early access, which in my mind makes sense that you would need to pay to join in on the testing.
Echo Dec 17, 2014 @ 11:57pm
Allowing everyone to enter the game for free at this point would have probably been a very bad move, because the servers would get severely flooded (well, more than they are now) and it would make development difficult.

But as people were very keen on getting into the Beta, they compromised a way that would allow them to do so while not letting just about every random person in. I think it was a pretty reasonable move. The servers still do seem to be under a fairly heavy load, but certainly not as heavy of a load as it could have been if everyone was allowed access.

But that's just my take on it.
Kwenami Dec 18, 2014 @ 12:44am
I don't mind how they did that. You can play in beta for a cost so it doesn't get flooded, they have a way of getting some extra cash, and it's not like you won't get the full update once it's ready anyways. It seems fair to me.

Guys guys! Its 5€ calm down.
Kuess Dec 18, 2014 @ 2:23am
How about calm down? And read the store page? NOTE: Players who currently own Don't Starve on Steam will get Don't Starve Together for free when it exits Early-Access.

So...just wait untill it's out of EA.... crisis averted
