Way to get Gears?

I played it pretty long ago. When I played it, if I remember correctly, the only way to find gears on an unmodded server was to stumble upon refrigerator and smash it with hammer (also maybe 1% to find it in a grave, I'm not sure). And game had plenty of recipes containing gears. There was many updates since I stopped playing. Have they introduced any official way to obtain gears? Or should I go for mods?

The clockwork (chess) pieces drop gears when they are killed. They spawn in chess biomes that are in a random place in the map

Tumbleweeds drop gears too.

not really...
after all he has to consume gears to level up...
forgot if it was 1/3 back on death or some % chance.... anyway too lazy to go back for that update post.
