Single copy, multiple players?
This may be against ToS of DST, but I was wondering about playing via LAN with a single copy of DST, e.g. with kids who cannot sign up for a Steam account due to age/lack of their own method of payment. I see that DST has Steam Workshop support, which typically means this isn't possible (as you cannot play against your own Steam account), but I thought I'd ask anyhow.

It would be awesome if the whole family could play with a single copy, like the old days.

I dunno if it's possible yet, but it would be nice if Local Co-Op was a thing for DST, so you could buy a copy, but play it with several people without every person needing a copy of the game
Local Co-Op honestly seems to be dwindling these days, and it's a real shame.

If you arent old enough to be on steam, you arent old enough to be on steam. Being more helpful thougn, No, as far as I know you cannot, and there are no plans to let multiple people steal copies by mooching off their friend or anything like that, unless somehow the family share thing works that way and i never checked. one player per copy, atleast as far as I know, which admittedly i havent looked into, i just made my friends buy it.

Steam has quite a few kid-friendly games for players as young as 5 or 6, and Don't Starve falls into a 'kid friendly' game -- of course, parents need to decide at what age DS is appropriate for their kids.

I do not believe the family sharing will function that way -- as that requires each individual to have their own Steam account, and if I recall correctly, it locks the library to a single person at a time.

That being said, yes this type of 'sharing' is certainly ripe for abuse. It would be a balancing act that the developers/pubishers would have to take into consideration, whether the portion of the market that cannot have their 'own' Steam account is worth it to them, or if that is outweighed by potential loss of revenue via pirating.

If the Steam Workshop is leveraged, but the multiplayer aspect is not, it may be possible to share a single copy for Dedicated Servers (LAN only), but I'll wait until the free copy is released for those who already own DS, rather than pay into Early Access. I just have a really excited young family member who can't wait for DST!

Thanks for the input!

Well, I don't see why not give the game a local co-op where players play in the same machine but with different controllers, especially with Steam Machines/OS.

youd be stuck on the same screen. What if I want to go left and he wants to go right? Youd need multiple monitors and so on wouldnt you?

You can already do this, DST has lan capability, and you could just install don't starve together on multiple computers then start it up in offline mode.

You never played co-op games where the screen was split in two or more? Like in those racing games in the consoles? That was what I thought about an alternative for local co-op

I have, and it was frustrating to no end, everyones screen was tiny and everyone screenwatches (not an issue in dont starve, but on the subject of shared monitor split screen), even with fairly large televisions its not very big when you split it up, it might work with just two players, but 4 would be pushing it with screen splitting.

Yeah, I was thinking about just 2 players, 4 would be too much. Anyway, I believe that would be hard find any game that allows more than 2 players in the same console (although I think they exist).

If that is the case with DST, then perfect. Thanks!

I'm going to try it myself, but I believe that you could just run Steam in offline and run DST on each computer. (As Zackreaver said) Of course, you can only play on LAN, but isn't that the point?

I tried to play offline (LAN) using a single copy of DST installed in two different PC. This is the DST message: "this account has been logged in from another location". So it seems to me that is impossible play offline with two player!? Help!
