They're quite slow to move, so running around them, wolloping them, and running away is a good tactic. Especially if other players help you.
If you're really struggling with killing it, bring it over to other enemies.
For example, lureplants will hurt almost anything, so if you lure the treeguard over to some eyeplant things (the weird eye things that surround the lureplant) they'll attack it.
Same goes for beefalo. They're quite a bit faster, so kiting them can be difficult, but if in doubt use your surroundings. Bring them over to a spider nest and let the spiders help. Or use the lureplant if you're not too fussed about the meat-drops.
Beefalo go around in heards, so if you can seperate them it'll be easier. Try and get them by themselves. Much easier to kill 1 beefalo than 6.
If you're not ready to fight a treeguard, try to plant pinecones around him, the treeguard will calm down.
If you dare to fight him, put on your helmet, and start a fight against him with 3 hits (4 hits if you have confidence), dodge and repeat. Until it dies, don't burn the wood that the treeguard drops.
Good luck!
If you follow the Lureplant strategy, the Treeguard will become neutral after it kills the first eyeplant. A Bee Mine or Killer Bee might work too.
If it's close enough to your base you can then recruit the Treeguard to kill hounds for you. Just be careful of the red hounds since they might burn the Treeguard to death and turn its living wood to ash.
