The characters aren't dead. Technically. They're just in Limbo and trying to figure out how the hell they got here. Most characters have an intro video you can watch, so you can understand their story, mechanics, and how they got here.
What stands out about this game compared to others, is both it's nice style, and its' difficulty. Sanity is the biggest player in this game. Do bad things, experience bad things, or stagnate on progression, and your sanity will go down. If it get's too low, unique enemies will spawn and torment you. But those creatures can drop exclusive loot used for various crafting items. So there's a give and take for Sanity.
There's plenty of free characters, and some paid ones you can unlock in-game. Each character has a completely different play-style. One can fight a lot better, has an exclusive helmet and weapon, but can only eat meat. One uses sanity as a weapon and can conjure up shadows to do tasks or fight for them, yet is weaker overall and requires more thought when playing. One is a Merfolk thing, that is friendly to, and can recruit, other Merfolk, yet the Pigs will naturally attack you on sight, unless you wear a disguise. Another is a child-spider-thing, friendly to spiders, can grow a whole colony of spider and command them, and can eat raw meat, yet has lower sanity, and whatever hates spiders, hate you. There's a lot of replayability with each character, so you shouldn't be bored at all if you enjoy experimenting with different play styles.
Buying this will also give you an extra free copy so you can send it to a friend, so your really buying 2 games for the price of 1. You can play with up to 6 players, even more with mods. And the mods... yeah its the Steam Workshop so there will be some... odd... mods. But there are plenty that add extra content that fit perfectly into the game. And if the game's too easy, you can tweak nearly everything about your world. Size, biomes, resource amount, tweak spawning of each enemy and animal, permadeath, respawning, a lot.
I would say DST over 1 if you like to play with others. DS1 is a solid overall experience with more mods, though DST has a lot as is.
Don't really think it's like Minecraft however. Ultimately a lot depends on you, like a game could be great for one person but terrible for another. Maybe you could try watching some videos of people playing it on youtube to get a better feel for things?
Oh ok. As the sanity, oooh it reminds me the Nintendo horror game which I think it's Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem. That was the best horror game for GameCube exclusive. I'll get the mod for sanity to have some hallucinations and jumpscares, I like to see where everything is not real. I might be a little masochist lol. I guess it's useless to say which one should I get, Don't Starve 1 only have singleplayer and doesn't have the customization like the outfits I think, but only with mods. And Don't Starve Together if I'm not wrong I can play as ghost. Which is wow. So I should get Don't Starve Together. Oh, and I didn't know that there's the console version too. I don't know how console is playable. But I choose on PC only because for multiplayer so I can avoid that lame of subscription and more mods to get. Oh, and someone rewarded me as clown? But why?! This community is getting a little toxic. XD But ok, thanks to someone for the free Steam points.
For the type of player like you?
Probably not worth it. So best just save your money for something "less weird" and more "stimulating"
a 'Run' can go for dozens of hours. It can take a while to get what you need, and that's even if you know what you're looking for. There's no shame in looking up beginner tutorials.
Singleplayer has DLC s and features that Dont starve together dont have.

i suggest you play this mostly with your friends, and on your own server(or your friends server).
Pubbing in this game is suicidal, specially on dedicated servers due to trolls reseting servers on graveyard shifts by killing themselves (when everyone is not playing).
Dont starve together is literally don't starve 2 .
Prepare to host your own server, with caves (unless your computer is a literal potato), and play on your own. But this game is nothing like minecraft, as you can't really move blocks of land. The only similarity with minecraft is minecraft survival mode, thats where the comparisons abruptly end.
is it worth it? probably not, this game is mostly a solved game
