Most played would probably be someone like Wilson, Wendy, Wolfgang, or Wanda. Those are the ones I see wandering around the most. Megabase builders especially seem to always be Wanda's
Wendy is by far most popular, wolfgang and wigfrid.... The first non damage cap boosting characters woodie and walter.
WALTER was once at the bottom for a long time (Even racing joke characters like wes for the bottom.)
Webber/Warly tie for the bottom now if we ignore wes.

She's
- A sarcastic negative nancy, so relatable to most gamers
- Not DLC
- Not outclassed in her own niche like half the cast is because Maxwell exists (although its getting close with how broken Wortox soul damage is, but he's DLC/grind)
- An easy mode character who trivializes basically everything short of a miniboss, who has long-since lost her weaknesses v those thanks to Beefalo and skill tree. Unless they nerfed it as some point, her 1.5 bonus actually applies to beefalos she's riding, making her one of the STRONGEST single target damage dealers using an infinite durability attack you can get with very little effort; she's like the poster child for DST's continued failing at balancing - this means she's very good if you're knew to the game and struggling or find it generally trivial; she's never bad
- As a result of the above never really dies unless you're insanely bad at the game (even if you're losing, you can just sac Abigail and run then revive her later)
- Just cool, because she has a permanent ghost, more so now she can interact with regular ghosts
- Doesn't have her crafting either overly high-effort for what its doing on the average server (Winona is a prime example), just means people turn into someone else after setup (Winona AGAIN; that character is trash and its no wonder no one plays her, also Wickerbottom) or just makes a tedious mechanic less tedious (Wolfgang), instead its really easy to craft flavourful items she doesn't actually need
- And she also has by far the best design with the giant spooky eyes. In fact, no less than 4 characters released post-Wendy (Walany, Wurt, Walter AND Wormwood all have giant blank white eyes) copy her eyes and that includes much of the DLC. Technically Willow had them first but her eyes completely lack any eyelashes, shadows, anything, so they just look weird and unfinished rather than stand out in a good way
I'd be very surprised if she wasn't the most popular, especially considering she's a cute little girl in a game mostly populated by asian players, especially when you compare her to the other characters, including such epics as "racial stereotype", "other racial stereotype" or "guy or girl who obsesses over 1 thing and all their dialogue ties into that one thing we really hope you like that one thing"
The english playerbase is fragmented between solo, passworded worlds, and the klei official servers (Which also cover a lot of eurozones too!)
It only seems to account of 40% of the players we would expect to see on steam charts, but its very accurate based on what I saw in true public servers (especially the week where wortox was treated like king and every server had 4 wortox a while back.)
