Major lag on LAN
My fiance and I bought another copy of DST yesterday, as a Christmas gift for both of us, but whatever we do, we can't play together. We live together, the computers connect through a router (cable, not Wi-Fi). When either or us sets up a server the host can play just fine, but the other one has major lag. We've tried setting up an online game, LAN only game and even hosted a game in steam offline mode, nothing helps.
I got DST when it was released for free and I was able to host games for online friends just fine, so I don't think my laptop or connection speed is the problem. My fiance and I used to play some other games locally too, and we've never had so much lag before. Both computers meet the minimum requirements for DST.

I don't know what to do anymore. Any ideas how to fix it?

Blaming the code when it works for others. Silly old people believing they're better than us kids. I googled "Lag on LAN" and found this.

Since the only thing we know about your network is "the computers connect through a router (cable, not Wi-Fi)," there is very little we can do to help.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about networks so I didn't know what info would be helpful.
We'll try to configure the network and read more on the subject if neccessary. Thanks.

If you're hosting the game online and having your fiance try to join it while you are both using the same router, this article may come in handy as well. Your router will only send the information to one machine per port at a time, which can cause massive lag or unplayability for the other.

Changing the ports made a noticeable difference. Game does lag from time to time now, but it's playable :D Thank you!

I was thinking back to when I hosted a LAN party for DST, and I remembered another solution which I am ashamed I didn't remember earlier. If you're only playing on LAN and don't care about your game being visible online, you can click "Play Offline" while the game is logging you in at the start up. This will make the game a true LAN instead of a LAN hosted online and should reduce your lag even further. So schism was right about the netcode being a bit silly, but it's usable.

Knowing the ports issue will help with games in the future as well. Glad to be of help!
