Stone fruit so nice.
You literally can fertilize itself with it's own fruit too.
Or burn the fruit for ashes if you're lazy.. stone, ashe and spider glands BAM a stack of healing lol

I mean they are pretty nice to have as a cheap and low maintenance crockpot ingredient alternative to farm plants, but other than that, they aren't very useful unless you're playing as wurt. There's plenty more effective healing items in the game like honey poultices, which not only give more healing but are also cheaper in my opinion as i find reeds and honey much easier to gather in large amounts than rocks and spider glands are. As for food, meat and meat based dishes are simply just significantly better in most situations than plant based ones.

@OmarTheInsomniac maybe. But the set up for a decent enough bee farm is more work than just planting a couple of trees. And I think most people often have a spider nest or two nearby, since it's easy access to meat. Even more so if they have a Wendy/Webber on the server. Not to mention, op is not implying they don't have or use a source of meat. Just that the versatility of the stone fruit is nice. Most people I've seen don't bother with reeds beyond making a birdcage, unless they're Wicker or Wigfrid. And occasionally Webber.

Yes, setting up a honey farm does take some time and effort initially, but once it is set up it becomes a permanent infinite source of healing and food that requires no input from the player(aside from collecting the honey itself, i suppose) while stone fruit bushes require to be regularly fertilised if harvested often, as well as a flingomatic if one wants them to continue producing fruit during summer. As for reeds, i find them easier to collect in large quantities than spider glands are because you have to regularly kill spiders frequently in order to get a lot of spider glands, which can become quite time consuming in the long run. With reeds, however, i can simply just get on my beefalo and easily collect an entire stack in less than a day without having to fight anything. It also greatly conserves your gold/flint supply in the long term as you won't have to use up tools to mine boulders/stone fruit for rocks. I do understand this a bit subjective though as not everyone tames a beefalo so they might find it quicker to kill spiders rather than gather reeds from the swamp. It's why i tend to base close to the swamp.

I figured this might be the case based on your first post. Swamp tends to take people out when they least expect it. And I try to avoid it during Winter. I just have too hard of a time seeing the tentacles when it's covered in snow.

A beefalo completely solves this issue as you move too fast for tentacles to hit you and it doesn't even matter if they do. You can even tank a few hits on purpose without any consequence if you want to collect something next to a tentacle. The high speed also means you can easily traverse the entire swamp and clear it out of reeds in a single day at most, so give taming beefalo a shot.

I want to, but it's so boring. And having any mob follow me irritates me, because they're often in my way when I'm planting stuff. Was literally on a server yesterday where someone left their beef behind, before logging. I'm trying to plant grass and twigs, and the beef is all up on me. Same reason why I usually don't have a pet. That, and some of them are so noisy.

Personally, I find taming a beefalo incredibly fun. The massive speed boost they give feels amazing, to the point that travelling without a beefalo just feels unbearable to me now, and there are few things in this game that are as enjoyable as demolishing bosses and mobs with nothing but a beefalo and blue mushrooms.(not to mention all the time and resources it saves you when preparing for bosses). Also a beefalo will only follow players other than its owner when not fully tamed. Once fully tamed, it will only run after and follow the player who tamed it. If you don't want your own beefalo following you, just leave the beefalo bell somewhere a bit far away or make them a pen. Sometimes I like making my beefalo a big pen using fences and placing a gate on each side of the pen so I can access it easily while also stopping my beefalo from be able to go outside it. You can also place a salt lick in the middle of the pen but that's not necessary. I think you should give it another try because its a lot more enjoyable than you give it credit for, especially on long term worlds.
