Charlie isn't doing it out of love for Wilson, simply Maxwell hid himself from charlie to stay on the throne, she was following him there so she could get to it. Once Wilson made it to Maxwell and kicked him off she had the chance to take over.

This is explained in the play Charlie made for the Stage you can find in the game.
