Can't attack

I have the default controls and whenever I try to attack something like a spider with my spear I just keep running into them and not attacking. How can I fix this?

Try using the attack buttom(default is "F").

When you walk around while having your mouse on something, the action changes from "Attack" to "Run to", so when you want to attack using the mouse, hold CTRL and then click or stand still.
