WX needs to work for his speed boosts so expect to take some extra time finding a plugged sinkhole, then the atrium/ruins to find any broken rooks on top of the extra scanning you need to do.
I can't speak much on Walter since I barely played him enough to understand the value Woby offers, but it's not hard for any character to start taming a beefalo quite early. train them to be a rider and they'll go pretty fast, especially if you pair them with the saddle that boosts their speed even further.
in short, Wortox and WX are good choices for early exploration, but they come with some caveats. however, beefalo taming is a decent way of going at it since beefalo are OP and they're an early access of extra speed.
You're in the same boat I was a week back when I'd never played Walter and barely even paid attention when others played him. I was pleasantly surprised when I accidentally discovered that [Walter perk spoiler] You can make Woby big and ride just like a domesticated beefalo
Thanks to riding Woby and no passive sanity drain from dark mapping the surface and caves is fast and easy.
WX doesn't even factor in in early game, as he doesn't start with the blueprints needed for his speed circuits. both Wortox and Walter start with their amazing abilities for exploration from the get go.
between Wortox and Walter, depends on playstyle/ability. if you don't have a hard time with combat, I think Wortox comes out tops.
no one else comes even close
Now, while i have not and will not do this, and it probably is not a good method, you could try to use woodie to explore in his goose form. He would be useless after, as maxwell is better at anything woodie can do, but he may do it somewhat fast.
Rule #1 when traversing the swamp as non Wurt player : Don't stop moving even for a second or you'll have a bad time xD
and therefore, i dislike walter, for he brought woby who has caused me a lot of pain.
Maybe but it helps against being slapped by tentacles in most awkward moments possible.
Especially since for some reason the tentacle idle sound sometimes cuts off when tentacles "hide" so where i think there was no tentacle suddenly i get smacked because i stopped for a moment to look at the map or place a campfire
I would rather advise to always keep eyes open, always keep a look out for the visual cue that there are tentacles lurking. they are somewhat easy to spot in daytime.
at night of course, this may be an issue. even with a lantern or miners hat, I would not recommend playing around in the swamp. maybe then, don't stop moving even for a second, would be the best advice, but only then :)
once you find a spot that isn't riddled with tentacles and merms, it's not a bad idea to simply stay put to do whatever you need to do. regardless, never let your guard down in the swamp. ever.
If your sanity is draining you are likely close to a tentacle and should move because tentacles drain sanity.
This is how I went about avoiding them because sometimes it's hard to see in the swamp. Unfortunately at zero sanity you can't see sanity drain so be extra careful.
Assuming you don't have a strong sanity restoration around tentacles this will almost always be true.
Eh i guess but honestly i don't really find that too reliable just like the idle sound that likes to randomly go silent untill i re-trigger the tentacle.
Often the tentacles are dotted around the swamp so that my sanity constantly drains.
And if you play as Walter you can throw that idea out of the window cause no sanity drain from monsters.
Yep tho when mapping the world early you try to not waste time and you run along the edges to have an outline of entire world and it's biomes. (Which Walter excels at doing)
So as long as you don't stop moving you will be fine if you do stop for a moment to look at map or something that's where you get tentacle'd and as bob mentioned earlier getting tentacle'd as Walter while on Woby can be indeed very fatal.
