This is literally the best time to get the game right now.
Buy the solo version ONLY for playing Hamlet/shipwrecked DLC part.
If you attempt to play specifically solo (no randoms either) then there are mods to adjust boss values (at least of those bosses that exist in DS - DST has several genuine more) back to singleplayer values.
So in my opinion you should be good with going straight for DST.
more often than not, players who post on the forums asking for co-op will get friend requests and play a world together. you'll still have fun in solo if that's your thing, but this is just some food for thought in case you ever feel like you want some people to starve with.
(tbh, i see 12k mods and i have no idea which1s i need to get for solo playing / what i need to search for)
DST provides plethora of options to make your world as easy or as hard as you want.
Use what the game and it's settings have to offer to your advantage and even without mods you can do fine in your own private world :)
But to answer your main question, yes, a $2 game that you can put thousands of hours into and still enjoy is totally worth it.
Yes you are. Together solo is completely unbalanced when it comes to boss HP. The rest of the game plays fine solo, but mid to lategame bosses in together have so much HP you have to somewhat cheese them when you play solo. It's doable but you'll need advanced tricks for sure. Starting with the base game is a much more balanced experience (or just downloading the mod that makes boss HP value imitate those of the base game)
When it comes to content, the solo game + DLC's has much more content than together, and also doesn't have lag which is a huge plus. You get used to the lag of DST eventually but if you go from DS to DST it's the first thing you'll notice. Together can be a nice experience solo, it's just harder, with more bosses, and overall less places to explore
I do prefer DS to DST though as a solo player. No lags and better balance on top of the unique content the DLC bring table. Plus is just got a giant bugfix/quality-of-life update so there hasn't better a better time than now to play it.
DST CAN be played solo however, many people do it and it has it's fair share of unique content as well compared to DS that fit into it being a sequel. That's why I suggest playing both, and in DST you can even add mods and such that help remove the lag and make enemies as easy to deal with as DS.
No lags huh?
