DS is singleplayer, DST is both sp and cooperative : )
*sry for poor english i tried*
DST is also cooperative, so you can play with multiple people, both version can be played with mods no problem, but i would say DST is more active, since well, its the sequel.
DST is a multiplayer game based on the base one + Reign of Giants DLC. It's basically reign of giants but with a few years of update content tacked on top, and reworked/bonus characters and cosmetics.
However, while the reign of giants dlc for the base game has less content than DST overall, the base game has TWO other complete DLC that DST just doesn't have, and both grant access to a whole new type of world with new seasons, bosses, biomes, monsters etc.
So it kinda depends on what you're looking for. Looking for the ultimate ROG experience ? DST is probably what you should go for. Want the game with the most content overall ? It's probably the solo game with its dlc's still.
DST on the other hand, is constantly getting updates, has new and reworked characters, can be played solo and multiplayer, and has cosmetics. The health values is balanced for multiplayer, but if you use good weapons and armor and know how to fight the bosses, it can be done quite easy to solo the bosses. If you're planning on getting one game and then getting another, i'd highly recommend getting DST first, as if you switch from fighting a deerclops with 2k health to a deerclops with 4k health, it can seem much more difficult and way longer.
And if you have nobody to play with on DST, you can always join the Klei Dedicated servers, theres almost always people on (at least the north american servers) and there's people who can help you if you need it. Just know it's better to ask 'can i do something with this?' if you are unsure than to do something with it and then have it turn out that you just ate a mandrake and now everyone hates you. Also, please, to ANYONE who plays this game or DS, CHECK THE CONTROL MENU. There are so many people who click to pick up items, attack, all that stuff, when theres a keybind that lets them do it 100x easier. Also make sure to wear armor.
that is all, good day to you and know that, no matter which game you choose to purchase, Don't Starve.
mind you, this game is balanced around multiplayer with most enemies having larger health pools than their DS counterparts, but there are mods that adjust the health to a very reasonable amount for single players.
the only major content you'll be missing out on from DST is Shipwrecked and Hamlet from DS, however there are also mods that port the DLC characters over to DST, and they do a really good job, might I add. there are a few mods that attempt to implement Shipwrecked and Hamlet into DST, but they're known to be awfully buggy at most times.
DST is a no brainer, especially since it's only $1.49 right now for TWO copies of the game, so please get it. you will not regret it.
