But if it's only you then no, the two areas will not run/be loaded at the same time.
That doesn't mean that your PC doesn't have a bit of extra work to do. When you switch from overworld to caves (or vice versa) your PC will have to load in the different biomes and entities, etc., and that in itself can cause (usually temporary) lag on some PCs.
If it doesn't smooth out after a minute or two then it seems likely there is at least one other issue causing your laggy experience. More RAM may help, if you can provide it. Changing the settings of the worlds you generate may help, as well. Smaller biomes, fewer entities, etc. A good starting approach to troubleshooting the issue might be to generate a world with every setting at absolute "minimums", and work upward from there, slowly adding or increasing this or that until you experience stuttering or lag, at which point you'll have a fair indication of just what your PC can actually handle and what it cannot.
Maybe thats why loads both areas at the same time?
No lags, no double servers, no griefers, pause whenever you want - works on ancient computers. And upcoming hamlet DLC :D
-a smaller (above ground) world size.
-a world without extra/creatures resources added in settings.
-a world without mods .
-a world without caves (as caves require 2 seperate servers running at the same time, and takes alot from any PC) OR if you're using caves "dumb down" all cave world settings/size.
-Don't have any programs running in the background or any windows/tabs open in the background.
-Enable "netbook mode" in the game settings menu to see if that helps any.
-If other people in your household are using the internet, you might need to do all of those to prevent lag.
-The longer you play; the more resources/items/creatures/etc there are. That plays into lag/rubberbanding as well.
Thats impossible for this PC (Has 4 GB of RAM but only uses 3.25), mostly since it's not mine. And the owner doesn't even care about it.
I always play with No apps on the background, Netbook is always on. It's not the connection, its only IF Caves are on.

If that doesn't help anything then your computer simply isn't up to handling running both servers at once. Then your best option is to either have a friend host or join a random (or better yet dedicated password protected group) server with caves enabled.
