Houndius for feathers

I found a lot of comments referring to using Houndius Shootius for killing birds / feather farming. How do you manage this? If I attack (or Ctrl-Attack) a bird, it just flies off. How do you get the Houndius to shoot at birds?

You can wear a feather hat to attract birds, stand next to the Hounius Shootius, and it will take care of the birds for you.

You can also wear the feather hat, stand next to a Flingomatic, the birds attracted to you will become frozen, then you can hit them.

Or you can just craft/place bird traps :)

With feather hat on, next to Hondius, seeing many birds landing - it does nothing. I might be missing something else here?

I used to just use tons of boomerangs (wigfrid), but was hoping Houndius could make my life easier..

I don't think there is such an easy way to kill the birds with the Shootius. You must aggro on them for it to shoot, but for this you must get close, so they fly away...
One way could be to use an ice staff, but then you could simply kill them even without the Houndius Shootius... so overall, I don't think it's possible without ranged weapons.

Maybe it's been changed since the articles were written (?). Pretty sure it only targets aggressive mobs now. Could be wrong though.
