-Make sure neither of you have any programs running in the background or any windows/tabs open in the background.
-Both of you should try enabling "netbook mode" in the game settings menu to see if that helps any.
-The longer you play; the more resources/items/creatures/etc there are. That plays into lag/rubberbanding as well.
-------------------------------------------------
If none of the above helps you might need to do one, a few, or all of the following when playing with that fried:
-a smaller world size.
-a world without extra/creatures resources added in settings.
-a world without mods (as mods are capable of causing memory leaks.. sometimes manual removal, from the game files themselves, is required).
-a world without caves (as caves require 2 separate servers running at the same time, and takes alot from any PC-on all sides).
thanks for the response.
we have been able to play with all these features for years with no problems so it's likely not an issue with world creation or assets. we are also using a mod that bunches up items on the floor into one stack for that very purpose.
it should be noted that i'm the only one in the entire server experiencing crippling network lag. it takes 3-5 seconds for my movement inputs to register and i keep walking even after i let go of the key. everyone else in the server is perfectly fine.
i have an effective 500 mbps download speed and after several ping tests i have a stable 40-60 m/s ping over the duration of 15 minutes. i don't lag in any other game so the issue is isolated to Don't Starve Together specifically.
i'm just baffled by what could possibly be the issue. i've been playing this game for many years and never encountered any network lag until now. it was working fine last weekend.
any help or guidance with this is greatly appreciated.
-As well as making sure you're running the most current version of Windows.
-Check your Task Manager while you're experiencing the lag, to see if any programs are running excessively/unusually high, or if something is downloading/installing.
-Try restarting your router and modem.
-Restart your PC if it's not been restarted in awhile.
-Also note that the longer you play in a world, the more things are in it, and that causes extra taxing of your PC.
-Not to mention the plethora of recent updates/patchfixes.
----------------------------
If none of the above helps, manually delete ALL mods from your game files, as it could be a corrupted mod file causing a memory leak, which can cause lag.
To do so:
-Turn off auto-subscribe, if you have it on.
-Unsubscribe from ALL mods, that are showing the error for you, on the Steam Workshop page.
-Go into your "Don't Starve Together" file/folder and manually delete ALL of those mods.
To do so; manually delete ALL:
workshop-<number> directories from your
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Don't Starve Together\mods directory.
-------------------------------
Then launch the server with NO mods on and see if the lag is still persisting
If there's no lag, you can then begin the process of adding the mods you want back in, ONE at a time, playing for a bit in-between adding each one.
Is it possible maybe to play it locally or maybe splitscreenish?
Maybe it supports LAN mode? No clue though ...
Try to cut out the online component to get lag less best performance.
As an alternative i believe the console versions come with splitscreen bundled out of the box...
GL on tinkering though
