Don't Starve Together

Why hasn't DS and DST been merged together yet?
The two games are literally identical, except one has a "story mode" and one has multiplayer. Why not just merge the games, since DST already has the solo mode. You just make each mode have their respective things (story, coop, etc). I never found the point in having two different ones especially since DST is the main game.

Cause DST is the sequel game.

Also DS and DST have more differences than you might think, such has the Ruins

But that's what I'm saying. Those can just be added or removed at any point into DST.

Could also count the DLCs

They could push the DLCs over to DST. Or even add them to the game as normal content. I dunno.

The DLCs and not to mention some core mechanics have been tweaked. There's a lot of smaller details involved in balancing a game for multiplayer vs solo. That's part of why some other games refuse to add multiplayer.
Also, some mechanics from DLCs are speckled throughout DST which runs mainly on the default game maps.. They look the same but they're quite different.

Yup, DST is far more complex and improved than DS.

You cant simply copypaste stuff and hope it works properly, specially regarding the DLCs.

Nah they don't need to copy paste but then can definitely incorporate DS into DST.

They could.. But it'd be a lot of work for the sake of losing money so can you blame them for not?

DST is a different game. We had to rebuild the game from the ground up in order to make it multiplayer. DS at the time we started DST was also getting additional content, and DLC, so at that point they diverged significantly enough there was no going back.

To get DS and DST to the same exact point would take a massive amount of time working on only that while NOT making new content. DS wasn't designed for multiplayer and A LOT would need to be changed... hence, DST.

They aren't merged because they aren't supposed to be merged

I have never seen merged version of half-life 1 and half-life 3 :P

Wait i thought they were the same game only DST had multiplayer. Only bought DS a few weeks ago as i play most games alone. Did i buy an inferior product? Even for playing it alone.

Eh... depends on your definition of inferior.

Personally i think DST is far better, but DS has its own things, mainly, the Shipwrecked and Hamlet DLCs.

But if you only care about the base game, then DST wins by a massive margin

Also, you can play DST solo if you want.

No, you bought the superior product because there's no other players

The Steam side of things complicates things too. Merging two products into one would probably be a nightmare. For trading cards, for badges, for ownership, for steam gift copies, etc.

Even Skyrim never merged it's versions. And standalone mod games based on skyrim that are downloadable on the store (like Enderal) have two versions on the store for each version of Skyrim they're based off of.

The game is completely different on a technical aspect, and most people don't own DS so it would be bad practice for them to have you install the other game partially even if you don't own it and can't play it.

As an example, DS doesn't run on a server, so you just have loading happen when you are nearby/ switching layers, maps aren't constantly updating and loading, if you change layers the game doesn't load previous layers, so in ruins, caves and the surface aren't loaded in and pretty much nothing can change there.

With DST, you have proximity loading server-side to ensure nothing loads too far from players to save processing power, but that's only for entities, the geography itself is still loaded in, even if you go in caves.

Just look at all thoses mods for DS that can't be ported easily to DST.
