Also DS and DST have more differences than you might think, such has the Ruins
Also, some mechanics from DLCs are speckled throughout DST which runs mainly on the default game maps.. They look the same but they're quite different.
You cant simply copypaste stuff and hope it works properly, specially regarding the DLCs.
To get DS and DST to the same exact point would take a massive amount of time working on only that while NOT making new content. DS wasn't designed for multiplayer and A LOT would need to be changed... hence, DST.
I have never seen merged version of half-life 1 and half-life 3 :P
Personally i think DST is far better, but DS has its own things, mainly, the Shipwrecked and Hamlet DLCs.
But if you only care about the base game, then DST wins by a massive margin
Also, you can play DST solo if you want.
Even Skyrim never merged it's versions. And standalone mod games based on skyrim that are downloadable on the store (like Enderal) have two versions on the store for each version of Skyrim they're based off of.
As an example, DS doesn't run on a server, so you just have loading happen when you are nearby/ switching layers, maps aren't constantly updating and loading, if you change layers the game doesn't load previous layers, so in ruins, caves and the surface aren't loaded in and pretty much nothing can change there.
With DST, you have proximity loading server-side to ensure nothing loads too far from players to save processing power, but that's only for entities, the geography itself is still loaded in, even if you go in caves.
Just look at all thoses mods for DS that can't be ported easily to DST.
